Great Test, Excellent Book, and Superb Service

I think Coh-Metrix is an absolutely excellent way to measure text difficulty and, while it has its limits--like any test-- it goes way beyond any standard methods of determining which texts are difficult and which ones are not. This book offers a clear explanation of the test's origins and methodology.

Nothing New to See Here

There is nothing in this book that hasn't been written extensively elsewhere on the internet by folks like Brett McKay of the Art of Manliness or Mike Cernovich of Danger and Play. Furthermore, the book was short. On one hand, this is a nice thing. It's a quick read! On the other hand, it lacked substance. For example, it played into the Red-Pill alpha-beta dichotomy that has little scientific basis in human psychology. If the author could include scientific studies to back up his claims about "alpha males," it would add more substance as well as add some pathos to his work!

There was one "golden nugget" I particularly enjoyed, however. Jason shortly discusses the difference between arrogance and confidence which you'll have to get the book to read! Unfortunately, it was the only new (to me) tidbit I read in the book. Everything else has been used and written about to death online.

You might find something interesting or get inspired for a short time with this quick read, but there's nothing new you can't find somewhere else online for free.

A good read that helps you to project confidence in everything you do.

To sum this book up it is all about having confidence and presenting that to others. No that isn't all this book says, it gives you tips and hints on how to show your confidence in a manner of different ways from speaking, to walking. It has a wide variety of topics covered that help you to understand how to be confident and project that in what you do and say.

I thought this was a helpful read and it is well written. It is a quick read, but full of good information. This is a good read for all guys, whether you are single and looking for a lady, or looking for a new job or a promotion at your job, this book gives helpful hints on how to present the best you possible. As I read through this I couldn't help but think of examples of the things he talked about in people that I have seen and know that use the points he laid out, whether they know it or not. Every guy should read this book.

Needs more thorough editing, appeals to dichotomous thinking, & makes claims with no evidence, but would make a good blog series

It's nice that the author is trying to help people by not charging for the Kindle version, and while I'm sure some people may find some value in this book, I had a hard time getting past 1) the writing style, 2) the adherence to dichotomous thinking, and 3) the lack of evidence for any of the claims made in the book.
1) The book is written in an incredibly informal style, similarly to the way a person might speak; it felt more like a first draft of a blog post where the author was just getting out the core ideas they planned to expand upon later, but then forgot to edit for coherence and consistency of style. There are succinct chapters with different sections, but the writing that fills in those sections feels more like a stream of consciousness rather than well thought out ideas. Regardless of the content, the book would benefit from some major editing.
2) One other issue I had is that the book succumbs to false dichotomies on nearly every page, presenting an incredibly black-and-white view of human interaction. It essentially states that you're either an a) alpha male, namely a movie star like James Bond, or b) everyone else, which means you're basically a wimp who doesn't get women. The majority of the writing is just an elaboration on this very simple theme, couched in attractive sounding chapter titles, but lacking any nuance. If you don't subscribe to a strict gender binary and your primary goal isn't to "get women," you may find the tone and vocabulary a bit dated and abrasive.
3) Numerous claims are made throughout the book, but no evidence is offered to support these claims beyond reference to an anecdote or platitude. It gives me pause to think that the author must consider himself to be an alpha male, and that that's reflected in his continual assertions about how to be an alpha male, but that those assertions are empty assertions with no support. Anybody can make an assertion, but a real alpha male is curious, shows humility, and backs his assertions with sound evidence.
I personally think this should be put up as a series of blog posts rather than as a Kindle e-book as I find it clutters up the marketplace and lowers the bar of acceptability for writing quality on the Kindle store. Again, I think it's kind of the author to put this up for free, but I would have preferred a more thorough editing pass at the very least, and a complete overhaul of the core concepts at best.

I love this detective that Mr Tallon Jones has created

The author sent me this book for free to give an honest review. I have read several Penny Detective novels before, which are usually set in a fictitious town in Merseyside called Croxley. This is different as Morris Shannon who is the main character is on his own, without his faithful sidekick, Shoddy. I love this detective that Mr Tallon Jones has created. He is flawed, human and makes mistakes. The book is written in first person and Morris's ironic look at life comes through on every page.
The plot is well developed and is based on the classic country house murder scenario which I love. The characters are well developed and Lady Cynthia, who is the person who hires Morris is so over the top that she parodies a lot of the female heroines in a Christie type novel.
if you are looking for an easy read that will make you chuckle, and has a twist at the end, then this is recommended.
The atmosphere created is cosy and the characters believable. I read this in one afternoon as it is a real page-turner.

Unpredictable!

I should start off by saying that I am usually pretty good at predicting storylines, I have made some amazing predictions before and I am almost always right. However, this story was one of the few times I've been wrong! I thought I knew who the killer was going to be only to realise too late that I was wrong! I did get it slightly before the big reveal but WAY later than I usually figure things out! So if I had to sum this story up in two words it would be - unpredictable mystery! And aren't those the best sort of mysteries around?!

About the Author
Dr. Allen Hunt is a nationally known speaker and best-selling author. His books include: Confessions of a Mega-Church Pastor: How I Discovered the Hidden Treasures of the Catholic Church; Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody; and Nine Words: A Bible Study to Help You Become the Best-Version-of-Yourself.

Allen stepped aside July 1, 2007, as Senior Pastor at Mount Pisgah, a congregation serving more than 15,000 persons each week through all of its ministries in Alpharetta, Georgia, outside Atlanta. While at Mount Pisgah, Allen helped to develop comprehensive ministries with children and students as well as a Christian School with over 1200 students; a Beacon of Hope pregnancy resource center; and the Summit Counseling Center.

On January 6 2008, on the Feast of the Epiphany, Allen converted to Catholicism. This transition represented the culmination of a 15 year journey in which God began leading Allen home to the Church. In many ways, this transition was effected by the prayers of a group of Dominican sisters at Monastery of Our Lady of Grace in North Guilford, Connecticut, who have been praying for Allen since he shared lectures with them during the season of Lent in 1992.

Prior to full-time ministry, Allen worked in management consulting with Kurt Salmon Associates, an international leader in the textile, apparel, and retail industries. Allen was educated at Mercer (B.B.A.) and Emory (M.Div.) Universities, before earning a Ph.D. in New Testament and Ancient Christian Origins from Yale University.

Allen and his wife, Anita, live in Atlanta. They have two grown daughters.

Great Way to Make Shakespeare Accessible

This line of books was recommended by the older sibling of our child's team mate. She is in high school and the No Fear Shakespeare books are being used to help teach Macbeth. I purchased this as a first step into the whole line. I love it. It does not diminish the beautiful poetry of Shakespeare's sonnets, but it enhances them by providing straight forward explanations in modern English on the facing page. I feel more able to absorb and appreciate these works now. We will be purchasing more of these wonderful books.

Eric Sammer is an Engineering Manager and technical lead at Cloudera where he works on various projects in the Hadoop ecosystem. His background is in the development and operations of distributed, highly concurrent, data ingest and processing systems. He's been involved in the open source community and has contributed to a large number of projects over the last decade.

A well written, and thorough treatment of Hadoop. Admins as well as Developers will benefit from reading this.

I recently received this book and, having experience with Hadoop, ripped through it cover-to-cover -- that is, you can
take this review as indicative of the entire book.

Whether the topic is HDFS and how data is ingested and replicated, or how Map/Reduce "finds" the most suitable
node to run it's tasks on, or what the cost and performance advantages are of adopting the shared-nothing, commodity
model recommended for Hadoop clusters, etc., etc., etc., this book provides the how, what, when, where and why of
Hadoop (the missing manual, of sorts).

Cluster Administrators as well as Map/Reduce programmers benefit from it's through, no-shortcuts-taken, breakdown of
the Hadoop platform. I highly recommend it.

Excellent guide for Hadoop in production

My "big data" (getting tired of a buzzword a little bit ...) project is now moving into a production phase where our customer will be deploying a Hadoop and other related technologies into their production data center.
This book could not have come into better time as production team is look to both contract the support team and to have a manual for Hadoop operations.

There are two things that I like about this book:

1. It covers all of the topics that matter. It covers most important aspects of the Hadoop platform and its architecture but from the operational perspective - HDFS architecture and cluster configuration, MapReduce and YARN execution models, cluster setup and most importantly a very detailes review of options and recommendations related to operating system, network and storage setup.

2. There are dedicated chapters to cluster maintenance, backups, monitoring and, very importantly, troubleshooting that go into very solid level of details on many of the problems or intricacies that one should better know about Hadoop in an operational setting.

These chapters are obviously written by someone who ran Hadoop many times before and in a large, production setting.
War stories and "mystery bottleneck" sections are great.

In summary, right book in a right time, although I feel we should have had similar book maybe a year ago. I am guessing that Cloudera wanted to get their solid cut first at consulting and support fees before making such material available ;-) (author Eric Sammer is Cloudera's solutions architect)

good collection of data and techniques on ops but will soon be old

As a developer looking to support devops it was a great read. Obviously with any book on hadoop time is not kind and while this book cover hadoop 2.0 AND mentions future work it predates hadoop 2.2 so some information or needs will not be met.
That said, still tons of good information here on how hadoop works and on topics like security and monitoring.
