About the Author
Dexter Perkins received his B.S. from the University of Rochester in 1973, and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1979. After graduate school, his first faculty position was at the University of Chicago. He came to the University of North Dakota in 1981 where he is currently a Professor of Geology. During the past 25 years Perkins has had several 1-year appointments at European universities. Perkins is a past editor of American Mineralogist and the Journal of Geoscience Education (since 2000).

Perkins’s regular teaching duties include undergraduate and graduate mineralogy and petrology. He is also an active geology researcher. He has published almost 100 articles in professional journals and has written three books. Past research focused on high-temperature minerals and rocks; his current research concerns xenoliths from the Southwestern United States, and science education reform. So, he is both doing basic scientific research and contributing to educational research.

In Black and White!!

This kindle version came in black and white and there is no way to get the color out on my kindle device or on my pc kindle reader. It's a huge bummer because color is a huge part of classifying and understanding minerals. Amazon does not say that this kindle version is in black and white and I spent a ton of money on it. I think it's a bit unfair to sell a book titled Mineralogy in black and white, will be calling to complain.

Well Worth the Price

Marcus Curtis has done an excellent job of cutting through the hype and fear tactics of many proponents of the GCR, and has provided factual, documented information with a healthy dose of common sense in order to present a realistic analysis on what is happening with the global currency situation. It's a tad long on history and explanation but I understand why he did that, because it was necessary to inform the uninformed and misinformed about these things. Changes are surely coming, but those changes will be determined by the powers that be based on a workable solution, not fantasy or conspiracy theories. I highly recommend this book as the $4.99 spent on it could save the reader hundreds or thousands in bad investment decisions.

Ieyasu comes to the greatest difficulty of his life

"Path of the Assassin, Volume 6: Life's Greatest Difficulty" consists mostly of the single epic story that gives the volume its title. Things are going well for Ieyasu, who it should be remembered is only 22-years-old at this point in his journey towards becoming Shogun and only now beginning to mull over taking the name Tokugawa. Meanwhile, Hatori Hanzo and Tsukumo have been away from their master, battling the ninja Kite Kato. Then Ieyasu comes to the event that he would speak of later as being the greatst difficulty of his life. Ieyasu had a fort built in Sasaki by Yahgi River, and now that it is completed he sets out to get some rice to stockpile at the fort, unaware that this simple act will stir up insurrections all over Mikawa, threatening not only his power but also his very life.

This classic samurai series from writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goecki Kojima, originally published in Japan under the title "Hanzo no Mon," is being published in 15 volumes by Dark Horse. Because of its focus on Ieyasu and Hanzo, this magna is more historical in nature than either "Lone Wolf & Cub" or "Samurai Executioner." At this point we are in the early 1560s, as Ieyasu battles the military forces of the Mikawa Monto, a group of warrior monks, who refused to obey his orders. Again the relationship between master and servant is defined as the difference between strategy and tactics: as the insurrections begin, Ieyasu sees the big picture, and knows it is up to Hanzo to do something to make the clogged river flow again (Remember, the magna is described as being about "Lifelong friends, with the same dreams, striving to grow into a rising river"). But this time, when the stakes are the highest they have been so far, Hanzo finds his efforts backfiring. In addition to the main plotline, Iyesau's wife sends her husband a strange message and Hanzo meets up again with Toma Eno, another suppa, who makes a strange request. Both of these sequences remind us that this story is far from over, although since Iyesau was 60 when he was named Shogun by the Emperor, I have to assume this magna will end decades short of that pivotal moment in Japanese history.

The second story here, "Changing Countenance," either constitutes an epilogue to this "Chapter on Shogyo Mujo," or is an interlude before the next story. It is not until Path of the Assassin Volume 7, Center of the World comes out in a couple of months that we will learn if the chapter continues or if Koike and Kojima are beginning the next one. A young girl wants to plead upon her death for Ieyasu to come and visit her dying father, a nameless, small "ashigaru" (foot solider of medieval Japan), who has a lesson to teach his master regarding the truth that can be read in the faces of men. The title comes from a series of masks the dying man has carved, to illustrate his point. Whether this presages specific events to come or is just a philosophical point raised in general, remains to be seen.

This pocket-sized magna format is oriented in the right-to-left reading format used by the creators, and you should have no problem with this approach by the time you are this far into the series. However, I wish I knew more about how these stories were originally published in Japan. A 282 page story in an American comic is going to run pretty much for a year divided into issues containing the same number of pages, unless it is published as a graphic novel. But "Life's Greatest Difficulty" is presented as just one giant story, even though there are clearly "episodes" within the framework of the larger narrative. When a particular "chapter" is broken into two parts in these Dark Horse volumes, ending one volume and beginning the next, I have assumed that these were artificial breaks, but I really do not know. Dark Horse could just be following what Koike and Kojima did for all I know. I am not complaining, because without the strictures of usual comic books, each of these stories is as long as Koike and Kojima need them to be, a fact amply demonstrated by the two stories in this particular volume.

I've been a long time collecter or almost everything that Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima have done, even some books and novels that were never released in the USA or translated into English. Their creative story lines and tradtional style of graphics are just outstanding!

A unique blend of action, politics and philosphy

If you haven't picked up this series yet, START! ...but don't start here. Go back to volume 1. Forget what you think about Japanese manga, and put aside comparisons to Koike's more famous work, "Lone Wolf and Cub" (written before this series) Path of the Assassin is a rare balance of action and insight into Japanese history, politics and samurai culture typical for Koike, but unique to "action" manga. Dont' get me wrong, nothing dazzles like a good super ninja story, and Koike keeps it rolling, but this ninja tale precedes a lot of later ninja tales (this one written in the 1970's) and has no direct successors except Koike himself. Later action manga might be splashier and depend on stereotypes and over top violence, but early Koike and Kojima cannot be beat for believable, human stories that are profound intellectually and emotionally, and always visually compelling. It is amazing to me that this complex story of medieval Japan is made comprehensible to Western readers simply by its great characterization. I know I don't truly understand Japanese culture, but Koike makes me think I do. Highly recommended.

Sequel to Heir to the Empire in this continuation of the Star Wars movie saga. Here, Leia Organa Solo, carrying twins, goes off (accompanied by Chewbacca and C-3PO) on a diplomatic mission to convince the Noghri to give up their indenture to the Empire and join the New Republic. Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker pays a visit to the Jedi Master C'baoth to continue his training, ingenuously not realizing that C'baoth is insane and headed toward the Dark Side. Meanwhile, Han Solo and Lando Calrissian are searching for evidence that Admiral Ackbar is not a traitor after all. Meanwhile, Grand Admiral Thrawn of the Empire is stamping out rebel enclaves and searching for the legendary Dark Force, 200 state-of-the-art battle cruisers that vanished years before. Meanwhile, smuggler Talon Karde and his second-in-command, Mara Jade, potential Jedi, may know where it is.... Despite stereotyped characters, supervillain posturing, last- instant escapes, and overall predictability, this is thundering melodrama, with a satisfyingly complicated plot. A good sequel.

I have been a fan of Timothy Zahn since I read Thrawn Trilogy in the 90s. Ive decided to read it again. Like the first book, Zahn did a good job in writing the story. Each chapter has a climax and a goo plot to it. In each page, Zahn puts in a lot of detail in the story. And briefly describes each character, and has specific scenes for each character. It a work of art. It doesn't stop there.

A Great Start to the EU

In the Thrawn Trilogy, Timothy Zahn kicks off the EU proper with a trilogy usually regarded as one of the EU's high points--and with good reason. Zahn definitely has a feel for Star Wars and his writing is perfectly suited for the task at hand. Thrawn is an extremely compelling character, as is Palleon. Jorus C'boath is another interesting character, and Mara Jade is downright essential. Most good EU novels will follow the same sort of direction as what Zahn did in the Thrawn trilogy, and characters from these books will pop up time and time again in subsequent EU books.

The right one, especially if you plan to donate large amounts

So much how-to advice is common sense, and yes, much of that in Give Smart is no exception. But I've read three books on the topic, most recently the unfortunate Giving 2.0, which is pretty puerile, and I find Give Smart to be the best of the bunch. Yes, it tells you the obvious: align your values with your donations, have open and honest communication with grantees, and so on, but because the book is borne of considerable experience and cites example after example, there's enough nuance spread through the book to justify the time to read, at least sections of it.

For example, grantors should not impose undue reporting requirements on the grantee. Sure, you want to know you're getting value received for your largesse but so often, accountability beyond a modest amount, hurts the organization and its efforts more than it assures you're getting bang for the buck.

The book stresses that you need to restrain excessive desire for micromanaging--you're not the program director, you are the funder and perhaps occasional advisor. The book urges that you put the time in, up front to find the right organization, and then try to keep your involvement modest. You need evaluate not just compatibility of the organization's mission with your values but, just as a venture capitalist might, carefully evaluate the quality of its leadership, its track record of results, and the sense that you'll trust the competence and integrity of their leaders, and yes, enjoy working with them: Donors have the right to derive some pleasure not only from the outcome of their donation but from the process, their involvement with the grantees.

Demand excellence of yourself

On average, philanthropy is ... well ... average. The current state of philanthropy is that it overhypes and underperforms. Market forces do not come into play, and the power imbalance between donors who have money and nonprofits who seek it can have a chilling effect on real time and useful feedback. Give Smart looks at what it takes to utterly transform this. Outstanding donors demand excellence of themselves and do not settle for mediocre results. They develop true and open partnerships with grantees and are not afraid of failure. They are clear about their values and beliefs and realistic about what they hope to accomplish. They have gone through the process of thoughtfully defining success and have a plan to achieve it. Most tellingly, donors who "give smart" continuously ask "Am I getting better?" and consciously learn to improve over time. Give Smart is a breadth of fresh air, challenging all philanthropists to rethink what they do and how they do it in order to get results.

The book gives good advice but much of it applies mostly to mega-donors; those who need a family office or will employ staff to administer their charitable funds.

Great Review Book For BC Calculus

My teacher had us buy this book at the begining of the year, and she assigned problems from it, and is has been invaluable. The problems it gives are not your standard textbook plug-in-the formula questions. There are some of those, but most of the questions require some thinking and an actual understanding of Calculus. Even though I switched teachers, I still used the book to help review for tests, and it has worked great. This is a great buy for anyone who needs a supplement of questions to help study from during the school year for BC calculus. The only negative about the book is that it lacks detailed explanations. It only gives the answers and also gives a cross reference of questions by topics.

best thing to ever use

Seriously, its multiple choice questions are the closest you can get to the actual exam. The free-response is iffy. I'd go with the Barron's review book for the free-response questions. However, if you can ace the multiple choice questions, you should have no problem with getting a 4 or a 5 on the actual exam. I used this book religiously (mostly because of my teacher) and I got a 5 on the BC Calc exam as well as a 5 on the AB subscore.

About the Author
Michael Howard is a solicitor and legal English lecturer from London. He grew up in Surrey, England and qualified as a solicitor in 2005. After many years of legal practice he decided to travel around Europe and the Middle East lecturing law and teaching English. His travels took him to Poland, Germany, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and finally back to the UK where he was invited to teach legal English to foreign lawyers and law students at courses run at Cambridge University. Great Reference & Study Exercise Book

I was happy to get this paperback book titled Legal English Dictionary and Exercise Book Drafting Commercial Contracts by Michael Howard. As I read through this book, I found it to be well organized, easy to read and a good reference book for law students and those who's first language is not English. I like that it is not only a dictionary but a glossary of types of contracts, commercial considerations, introductory contract terms, duties and obligations and boilerplate clauses. At the end of the book I like that there are a lot of different types of exercises that include the answers at the very end of the book. I think this would be a good dictionary for law students.

Good Spanish Review but with Problems

I ordered the Kindle version of this book and have read almost the entire book, or should I say the four main books included in this All-in-One. I purchased the book as a review of Spanish grammar, even though I am an advanced non-native Spanish speaker, having lived in Peru twice (once for two years and once for one year), and mainly I purchased the book as a Spanish phrase book to review phrases needed in the workplace. The book fulfills the goals for which I purchased the book.

So why only three stars? First, it has Spanish grammatical errors in the section on Education phrases and conversation. This totally negates the purpose of that section: to provide a pattern of good Spanish. For example it uses "�Qu�?" when it should use �Cu�l? in several questions; it shows the negative familiar imperative as the positive familiar imperative by just adding "no" in front of the verb (one example: says "no molesta a los dem�s" instead of "no molestes a los dem�s"), and in some cases it uses the indicative when it should use the subjunctive (for example, "espera hasta que te toca" instead of "espera hasta que te toque." (I used a Google search to try to find an errata for the book, but I couldn't find one. The publisher really needs to take care of this.)

Second, many of the tables are unreadable on the Kindle without converting the display font to the smallest possible and switching to landscape view. This gets annoying after a while.

And third, the conversations (valuable otherwise) don't highlight the Spanish so if you are reviewing a particular conversation, it is hard to pick out the Spanish phrases from among the English translations and pronunciation guides.

In spite of these drawbacks, I would recommend this book to beginning or intermediate Spanish learners.

Overall Amazon did well with the shipping. The book itself has quite a lot of misspellings so that will make it difficult to learn properly but I guess that should be expected from a book for dummies.
