Hazard Analysis is ok
By Robert J. Beltrame
The presentation of material in this book is ok, as it covers most of the current day processes used in evaluating safety and process hazards and risks. The book does not bring all of the different methods of analysis into a consistent coherent dialog. Many of the terms used in one portion of the book are contradictry to other portions of the. Examples are the use of the terms likelihood vs. frequency vs. probability and risk analysis vs. risk assessment vs. risk management. Overall the price of this book ($160) is hard to justify for the content however there are not a lot of good books on this subject matter. I would recommend buying these types of books from professional societies whose members are Chemical Engineers, Proces Engineers or Safety Engineers.

Very practical - down to the facts
By V. Vande Capelle
This is a very practical and probably one of the best books available for everyone who wants to understand the buzz words of Functional Safety.

The Process Hazards Analysis techniques should be read/studied and understood by all process/instrumentation engineers and plant managers.

That would be a good start and avoid industrial incidents like Bhopal, Piper Alpha, Texas City and unfortunately some more to follow...

Dragons of the Dwarven Depths: The Lost Chronicles, Volume 1, by Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman

The Companions are back in the first volume that features an untold story from the War of the Lance. The beloved heroes return: Tanis, Raistlin and Caramon, Sturm Brightblade, Tasslehoff, and Flint Fireforge. Old friends, such as Riverwind and Goldmoon and Laurana travel with them. Old enemies are here too, as the companions encounter new adventures and new dangers in the very beginning months of the War of the Lance.

This audiobook starts with the celebration of a wedding. The companions believe they have slain the evil Dragon Highlord Verminaard. They have rescued the refugees from Pax Tharkas and taken them to a valley in the Kharolis mountains.

After they are attacked by the Dragon Armies, Tanis and Flint are sent to search for the long lost dwarven kingdom of Thorbardin, hoping to persuade the dwarves to give the refugees shelter for winter.

Each of the other companions face their own trials. Raistlin remembers that, according to tales of old, the key to Thorbardin lies in the haunted fortress known as Skullcap. The others want nothing to do with this accursed place, but Raistlin feels strangely drawn to the ruins, and he persuades a reluctant Caramon to accompany him there.

Sturm becomes obsessed with finding the legendary Hammer of Kharas, and his obsession nearly plunges the party into disaster. Riverwind, now chieftain of his tribe, is made the reluctant leader of the refugees and worries that he is not suited for the task. Tika Waylan must decide if she has the courage to undertake a perilous journey to save those she loves from certain death, while Tanis Half-Elven wrestles with his faith in the newly returned gods.

It is the dwarf, Flint Fireforge, who faces the most crucial test. As the heroes race against time to save the lives of the innocents dependent on them, Flint is forced to make a difficult choice, one on which the future of mankind may rest. And the only one he can depend on for help is the happy-go-lucky kender, Tasslehoff Burrfoot.

For a time, it seems they have found a safe haven in the dwarven kingdom, only to discover there is no safe place anywhere in this world, as the Queen of Darkness and her dragons set the land aflame.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–In Dragons of the Dwarven Depths (Wizards of the Coast, 2006), authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman attempt to fill in some of the gaps in their popular Chronicles Trilogy series. The story picks up after the Companions of the Lance have helped a group of slaves escape from the mines of Pax Tharkas. The group takes refuge in a mountain valley, where they hope to be safe from their former masters. When the illusion of security is dispelled by the appearance of one of their old enemies, the heroes take action. They seek out the lost dwarven stronghold of Thorbardin, hoping that the dwarves that still remain within will give shelter to the refugees through the winter. However, this sanctuary comes with a cost. The Companions are forced to take up a quest for the fabled Hammer of Kharas. The story is weighted with exposition that drags down what has the potential to be an exciting plot. While the characters may be old friends to returning readers, those new to the Chronicles will find them flat and underdeveloped. Sandra Burr's clear, melodic voice guides listeners carefully along the journey. While she skillfully provides distinct voices for a large cast of characters, some of them grate on the ears. This recording will be in demand by fans of the previous books, but it will not draw in new listeners.–Heather Dieffenbach, Lexington Public Library, Beaumont Branch, KY

About the Author
Margaret Weis is the co-creator of the Dragonlance world. She has authored or co-authored several New York Times best sellers set in the Dragonlance world. Weis lives in Wisconsin.

Tracy Hickman has been writing and exploring fantasy and science fiction since the 1970s. Tracy eventually became a New York Times bestselling author (with Margaret Weis) of numerous series such as Dragonlance, the Death Gate Cycle, Darksword, and Rose of the Prophet and other series. Together with his wife Laura, Tracy has created Dragonlance and Ravenloft games and, more recently, their own fantasy series, The Bronze Canticles. Song of the Dragon and Citadels of the Lost are the first two novels in The Annals of Drakis. Tracy and Laura live in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah and have four grown children.

From AudioFile
Even a series as well populated as that of the dragonlance universe has gaps. For followers of the series, this first in the lost chronicles fills in background from the war of the lance or, for newcomers, provides a new entry point to the series. Sandra Burr appears to have fun with her characters, bringing humor to the characterizations, clearly reflecting the relationship between Tanis and Flint, and offering a bit of comic relief at times. Her characterizations are descriptive. Her portrayal of the low-level acolytes of the dark queen, who are hissing lizards, almost slithers. Their leaders are more subtly portrayed, an approach that is consistent with their characters. J.E.M. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

But there are two good reasons to do so
By Amazon Customer
Do you need to read this book to make sense of the Dragonlance series? Not at all. But there are two good reasons to do so:

1. If you are a fan of the RPG adventures, and you wondered how they might reconcile the Verminaard's end in the novels with Verminaard's end in the adventures, you should probably read this.

2. If you just want one more shot at reading the classic version of the Heroes of the Lance, all together, acting the way you remember them acting, you should probably read this.

It's fun, it fills in some gaps, and it's like visiting old friends. If you have the time, pick it up and get some warm feelings and nostalgia from the read.

Disclaimer: If you aren't already nostalgic for the original series, it's probably not worth your time.

Last Call at the Inn of the Last Home Made Worse in Kindle Version
By Kevin M. Derby
This review looks at the Kindle version of "Dragons of Dwarven Depths" by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

Fantasy readers should not begrudge Weis and Hickman for returning to the story that started the Dragonlance franchise but they should have concerns. Far better writers have failed to recapture past magic when they returned to past subjects (for example, Hemingway's "The Dangerous Summer" simply can not live up to the same ground he covered before in "Death in the Afternoon"). Thankfully Weis and Hickman avoid the major pitfalls. This book does not take any luster off the original Dragonlance Chronicles.

"Dragons of Dwarven Depths" is a solid if unspectacular addition to the series. There is a certain joy in seeing beloved characters interact with one another and the writers send more than a few knowing winks the reader's way since we know more about the plot than the characters do at this point.

Some of the best parts of the Dragonlance series focused on the intimate moments; when the companions seemed more concerned with their own survival and what was in front of them than the epic wars for control of Krynn. Weis and Hickman are able to present some very good scenes when they can think small; when Tika and Tas face dangers; when Raistlin, Caramon and Sturm explore a dungeon; when Tanis and Flint look for a lost city. When Weis and Hickman try to show the bigger picture (for example, Riverwind leading an army of refugees or an in-depth take on dwarf tribal politics), the authors simply lose the narrative and the reader loses interest.

There remain some problems with the book. This book suffers from poor editing; poor copy editing and poor plot editing. One of the chief reasons Weis and Hickman split the Companions apart in "Dragons of Winter's Night" is they could not focus on character development when there are too many actors on the stage at once. That's a problem here since Tanis, Tas, Flint, Caramon, Raistlin, Laurana, Tika, Sturm, Riverwind, Goldmoon, Elistan, Gilthanas, even Hedrik the Theocrat. not to mention a host of new dwarven characters and villains, fight for page time. Tolstoy may have been able to pull the strings on so many puppets but Weis and Hickman simply are not up to that level. For example, the first part of the novel shows more focus and depth on Tika than almost any other part of the series. She's invisible the second half of the book. One has to also concede that the first half of the book is much more gripping than the second half-and no, that has nothing to do with Tika.

Despite these flaws, the authors are able to hold the book together through good characters and a decent enough plot. If Weis and Hickman did nothing to take the series to greater heights in this book, they at least did not tarnish their previous glories.

I gave the book four stars--but I have to give a lower ranking to the Kindle version. Words blend into one. Spelling mistakes not in the original book can be found in the Kindle version. Spacing is atrocious as paragraphs are jammed together. This comes off as amateurishness and readers should expect better from the published of a well established series like Dragonlance.

More "War of Souls" than "Chronicles"
By Richard Raley
I know some enjoyed the War of Souls, but it wasn't my favorite trilogy in the DL world, nor do I rank it anywhere near the original Chronicles that "Dragons of the Dwarven Depths" is trying to emulate. It felt slightly whiny, the characters argued nonstop about every little detail, and the characters themselves were shallow despite what could have been an interesting plot. I really feel the same thing happened here for a good chunk as well.

It's a good plot, a plot that has the horrible prequel feeling because you know how it all ends, but a good one. The old companions that we know and some of which we love are back, but are stuck between novels and worse, stuck in a valley with a few hundred starving friends and nowhere to go. Thus, they decide to journey to the ever sealed dwarvish kingdom of Thorbardin and ask if they can stay over, sleep on the couch, you know...just until they can get a job and get their own place...what are friends for, little buddies? But the dwarves don't like freeloaders, so they tell Tanis and company to go do some chores: mow the mushroom fields, clean the chainmail, feed the giant worms, find the legendary Hammer of Kharas that has been lost for 300 years, stuff like that.

So good plot and, !surprise! a good villain actually. Dragons and draconians provide for some nice menace and action despite the fact we already know that no one can die and the general boringness of hero versus six goblin fights. The main villain, an Aurak magic using draconian called Dray-yan that is pretending to be the presently very dead High Lord of the Red Dragon Army has probably the best scenes in the whole novel since we don't have any preconceived perceptions about him (the worst go to Riverwind who does the most among out whiny).

And THAT is really where this novel hurts. The characters are hit or miss and they just don't seem like the OLD companions. If you don't hit the old beats exactly, then you're in trouble, and Weis and Hickman missed them many times. Raistlin isn't enigmatic but is more spoiled brat. Caramon isn't a trouble brother but a complete moron. Sturm is a jerk, Tika a jealous girlfriend that doesn't like the fact her possible boyfriend dares to have other responsibilities, and Tasslehoff...well Tas actually has a little bit of Jar Jar Binks going.

But, luckily for you and for me, the vast majority of those misses happen in the first "book" or first 200 pages. That was a drudge to read through but the last 200 are a complete joy. The characters are mostly on, the action is nice, the villains are around, Raistlin is smart and pained not a jerk, Tas is funnier than his Jar Jar beginnings, and everyone generally does something interesting to see that the quest succeeds.

Final Thought: Its fun to remember and to see those old characters when they shine through. Don't expect a whole slew of wild adventures and you should come out of the novel pleased with what you read. If you get through the whining and praying for the gods to save them in the beginning, you'll find some of the old Chronicles at the end. Hopefully the second novel of the trilogy continues how this one ended.

Added Thought: Please do not tell new DL readers/friends to read these chronologically. "Chronicles", "Legends", then they can come back for these. It contains a great deal of "Legends" info for some reason that would help ruin them.

Raven: The Untold Story of The Rev. Jim Jones and His People, by Tim Reiterman, John Jacobs

The basis for the upcoming HBO miniseries and the "definitive account of the Jonestown massacre" (Rolling Stone) -- now available for the first time in paperback.

Tim Reiterman’s Raven provides the seminal history of the Rev. Jim Jones, the Peoples Temple, and the murderous ordeal at Jonestown in 1978.

This PEN Award–winning work explores the ideals-gone-wrong, the intrigue, and the grim realities behind the Peoples Temple and its implosion in the jungle of South America. Reiterman’s reportage clarifies enduring misperceptions of the character and motives of Jim Jones, the reasons why people followed him, and the important truth that many of those who perished at Jonestown were victims of mass murder rather than suicide.

This widely sought work is restored to print after many years with a new preface by the author, as well as the more than sixty-five rare photographs from the original volume.

Preface

Three decades have passed since more than 900 Americans suffered horrible deaths in the jungle of the impoverished South American country of Guyana. The events in Jonestown on November 18, 1978, orchestrated by a charismatic preacher named Jim Jones and triggered by the slaying of a United States congressman on a nearby airstrip, have long ago moved from worldwide headlines to the pages of history. Yet fascination with the final days of Jonestown and the life of Jones has persisted over the years.

One of the most shocking and baffling events of the last century, the demise of Peoples Temple has been chronicled in books, movies, documentaries, plays, scholarly studies and countless television retrospectives. The images of an American tragedy on foreign soil -- poisoned punch squirted down the throats of infants, families locked in final embrace, mounds of bodies bloated in the tropical heat -- have endured in print, photos, video footage and memory.

Jonestown has come to symbolize unfathomable depravity, the outermost limits of what human beings can visit on each other and themselves, the ultimate power of a leader over his followers. Although complex and elusive, the reasons for the collapse of the Temple’s utopian dream into a hellish nightmare have been reduced again and again to a simplistic interpretation: a Svengali led his compliant, even robotic, flock to mass suicide. But Peoples Temple was more than a creation of one man’s vision. The Temple was a product of its time and the search for alternative religions and social relevance in the post-civil rights and post-Vietnam eras. Its story also speaks to the timeless yearnings of the human spirit for a sense of belonging, to be part of something larger than ourselves.

Above the wooden, throne-like chair from which Jones lorded over his people hung a sign that said: “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’’ However, remembering the past is one thing, understanding it quite another. And this volume endeavors to do both, while piercing the many myths that have shrouded the truth about Jones, his followers, and the remote agricultural settlement that bore his name.

—Tim Reiterman

Pretty much the definitive work on Jim Jones, Peoples Temple, and Jonestown
By A.J. MacDonald, Jr.
Good book on the subject. Pretty much the definitive work on Jim Jones, Peoples Temple, and Jonestown. It's a long read, and it can be pretty disturbing at times. It's well written, and, at times, hard to put down. Although I did put it down half way through for a few weeks, because it was so intense. I needed a break from Jim Jones. I have a very incidental connection to Jonestown, which has always reinforced my interest in the subject. I was in the US Army during November 1978 and on leave in Maryland when the Jonestown murder/suicides occurred. In December I caught a USAF MAC C-141 flight from Andrews AFB to Travis AFB in Northern California. The plane was coming from Dover AFB and was loaded with dozens of the remains of people who died in Jonestown. In fact, I was the only living passenger on that flight. It was just the crew, me, and dozens of the dead from Jonestown. I had a copy of the Newsweek special Jonestown edition to read while on the flight. Every now and then I would look up from the magazine at those stacks of aluminum containers imagining those poor people inside.

An excellent, thoroughly researched book on the Jonestown massacre
By Lynn
An unfathomable tragedy. An excellent, thoroughly researched book on the Jonestown massacre. Unlike other more self-serving books written on this subject, this one is not only well researched but a first hand account of what happened to the Ryan delegation in Guyana - as author Tim Reiterman accompanied the group as a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner, and was wounded in the attack. One of those killed, along with Congressman Ryan, and two newsmen from NBC, was fellow Examiner staff photographer Greg Robinson. This story is told in its entirety, from Jim Jones' poor, neglected childhood, to his discovery that he possessed a mesmerizing ability to influence people, to his days of political influence and increasing secrecy connected to his organization, and finally to his and his followers deaths. The tale of his improbable rise as chameleon/huckster, reverend, and cult leader, and then subsequent descent into complete diabolical madness is nothing short of astonishing. I was 30 when this happened and I remember reading about it in detail, however many, many facts hereto unknown about Jones, the people around him, and the People's Temple are unearthed here - and it's fascinating. I love true crime, and although this genre is considered History/Religion and not True Crime, the final outcome, in the words of one survivor, was never about suicide, but instead about mass murder, and as such I would put this in a category with Helter Skelter in terms of its chilling effect, and ability to open one's eyes to the limits of human evil.

"Don't Sign Any Blank Sheets of Paper!"
By Harry Dschaak
Tim Reiterman was at Jonestown and later at the airstrip in Port Kaituma, Guyana when it counted. He did what his employers needed him to do that day and then he did what the entire world needed him to do when he recovered from his near death experience. This incredible story is about a man with a personality disorder that few people in the 70's could recognize, and as such, many thousands of lives have suffered; so many more than the ones who died on November 18, 1978. I am glad that somebody took the time to paint the global picture of religion and politics, (peaceful demonstrations and the prestige of block voting, etc), including evangelist revival healer trends that were popping up all over the place in those days, but more importantly I'm glad to be reminded that Jones was not a good man, but a con man with a very determined desire to make a name for himself. The author has obviously logged tremendous hours digging through the rubble and charred remains of the Jonestown massacre to provide insight and awareness to aid us in overcoming the superficial conclusions that so many are quick to reach when first considering the magnitude of this event. We are not surprised that so many innocent people had to die horrendous deaths before society could expend any energy to investigate the initial complaints (beyond raising an eyebrow). Displayed herein is the Jim Jones playbook on what ambitious types have done and can still do to gain political support, moral and emotional support, as well as unquestioning financial support through insincere means. The People's Temple members (including defectors) were all susceptible human beings who became compromised when moral barriers were breached (by example), and critical thinking skills were effectively turned off. The theft of innocence and the eroding of people's integrity was a refined skill that we cannot entirely credit Jones for, as he had mentors and accomplices who were just as rotten as he was. The examples of persuasive coercion (intimidation /emotional blackmail) and the undue influence (through guilt and ignorance) techniques of the free-love era have become more easily recognized and more widely understood with the passing of time, which makes this story all the more heartbreaking to read. I was 21, living in San Francisco when this all went down and I remember that just a few days later our City Mayor [Moscone] was assassinated in an unrelated development. With Charlie Manson and his family of loyal meat carvers still fresh in everyone's minds, we were stunned that such a thing like Jonestown could happen on such a grand scale. Why wouldn't anyone back Christine Miller when she tried to reason with Jones in the long, pleading minutes before a single infant was casually sacrificed to death? How someone could willingly slit the throat of a toddler, let alone their own child (As Sharon Amos did), is now perfectly clear. Without education (the due process of meticulous investigation and discovery) regarding the science of cult behavior, (as demonstrated within the Manson Family), the peace-loving, non-racist, People's Temple "Family" were destined to become the same caliber of ruthless killers as Manson's, if not just a little worse. How many times did the conscientious defectors in this story finally get the courage to make a run for it, only to return for more abuse, and in some cases, death? The People's Temple in Guyana was pinched for vehicles and construction equipment to develop the Jungle and the facilities and infrastructure would only handle a few hundred bodies when paranoid Jones inspired 1200 (some with disabilities) to descend on his camp. After a year of extreme sacrifice and rationing they kill themselves, leaving upwards of 5 million dollars in foreign banks with another couple million in assets?? What's up with that?? With so many pronouns included in this book, it is easy to lose track of the characters, so I recommend that future editions include a glossary of the names and lives of those who died or were killed that day. I used this site: http://jonestown.sdsu.edu/?page_id=690#X as a ready reference to help keep things straight in my mind, especially since there was so much geography, interracial families and wife-swapping going on. (The link also provides last known pictures of the victims [where possible] and a short bio or remembrances. If a person in the story didn't die, they're not on the list, which while reading, is sometimes really nice to know.) In spite of the absent victim list, I gave the author 4 stars for the research, (banking, healings, drugs, ammunitions, victim's talents, etc) ) and 1 star for having the presence of mind to take photos of the plane with the flat tire sitting on the runway with the actual deceased bodies of friends and co-workers still on the runway. So much of the story depends on the visuals one conjures up in the mind according to the adjectives offered, but I did not want to imagine that scene, I wanted to see it.-- Harry
