Good intro to the law

This is a great textbook for students who have a basic understanding of real estate but want to know more about the laws that shape the profession. It goes into more detail than your usual real estate textbook but it's still easy to read without sinking into legalese. Students especially seem to like the examples taken from real-world cases.

Frank Lothar Hossfeld is Professor of Old Testament at the University of Bonn, Germany. He is the author of Der Dekalog (1982) and Untersuchungen zu Komposition und Theologie des Ezechielbuches (1977).

Erich Zenger is Professor of Old Testament at the University of Münster, Germany. He is the author of numerous works, including To Begin with, God Created (2000), and A God of Vengeance (1996).

Superb commentary

I'm actually currently in the middle of this commentary, but it's superb from the part of it I've read so far.

First, let me say that this is NOT a devotional commentary; it is a very technical commentary that delves pretty deeply into the details of the text. It covers textual issues like translation, redaction and form critical views on the text, parallel texts, genre analysis, etc. I've found the authors to be very careful commentators, even in cases where I don't necessarily agree with them. (Even speaking as an evangelical I liked it; the authors are clearly NOT evangelical, or even necessarily that conservative, but I can find much benefit from it even so).

I particularly appreciate their discussion of how each Psalm fits in with the overall picture of the Psalms and the rest of Scripture. (The authors present the rather unique view that the ordering of the Psalms is very deliberate - there's a structure to the Psalms as a whole; I find that helpful).

Definitely recommended. I'm used to reading more devotional commentaries like Matthew Henry, who are helpful in their own right but obviously this book isn't the same type of commentary. This book provides a much different kind of information than you'd find in that type of commentary and is extremely helpful (especially if that's the only type of commentary you've read). If you're reading this for personal enrichment, I recommend studying both "side by side" to be honest - that's what I've been doing and it's been extraordinarily helpful to my personal Bible study. You'll gain a much richer understanding of the text than you would otherwise.

Just as a quick formatting thing - the authors give the translation (along with footnoted commentary) at the beginning of the chapter and don't repeat the verses when they're doing the verse-by-verse comments. I understand why they did that (saves space) but it can be a little inconvenient to flip back and forth between the text and the comments. Personally, I just keep a Bible handy for the verse-by-verse comments, so that's an easy enough solution.

Just a quick note to my fellow evangelicals. Those of us who hold to Biblical infallibility (myself included) tend, I think, to be extremely suspicious of any use of things like redaction criticism which (to us) sometimes automatically mean "the Bible is wrong." I don't think that that's necessarily the case, especially with O.T. texts like the Psalms. There was clearly some degree of redaction (editing) going on in several texts; consider the fact that Proverbs mentions Hezekiah's men adding additional material to the book, or the fact that Deuteronomy mentions Moses's death. (Yeah, I do realize that some people think that Moses wasn't the author, but I hold to the traditional view that he wrote it). This doesn't mean that the text is wrong, "less infallible," or less inspired as a result of the later edits; it's just a reflection of the fact that authorship in several of the O.T. books is much more complicated than it is in many of the N.T. books. For example, Paul's letters are pretty easy - Paul wrote the whole thing. Not too interesting. Books like Psalms and Proverbs are much, much more complicated though. So I don't think that we should feel at all threatened by the (appropriate and cautious) use of redaction criticism on these books.

About the Author
Janet Wehr, RN, QTTP, has been a registered nurse for 22 years and has devoted the last 17 years of her nursing career to hospice care. She has been actively involved in the healing modality of Therapeutic Touch for over 20 years and is a Qualified Therapeutic Touch Practitioner. She is a member of the Therapeutic Touch International Association and the American Holistic Nurses Association and is on the Board of Directors for Saret Charitable Fund of DuPage County, IL.

Death and dying: it's inevitable for every human being. Yet in the healthcare arena, education and exposure to what most matters in this challenging journey can be misunderstood, sparse and even totally ignored. Get set to change gears and expel fears in a sensitive yet refreshingly frank new book by Janet Wehr, RN: Peaceful Passages: A Hospice Nurse's Stories of Dying Well (Quest Books, October 2015) This wonderful book is practical, inspirational and heart-fueled. It is just plain "good medicine".....a balm that soothes the senses and the soul. Diverse stories "on the job" offer real help and insight for patients and families alike. There is a core sensitivity to dignified care and respect for cultural differences that weaves thru every tale as well as attentiveness to the various ways that people communicate. All this is embraced in a palpable loving atmosphere. Hospice of America has already shown interest in using this book as a training manual. Janet cared for both of my parents who died peacefully, in a hospice environment, twelve years apart. I am forever grateful to her for her compassion as well as her expert care. Now I am honored and blessed to let others know about Janet as she looks back at seventeen years of hospice nursing. This is a gem of a book filled with wisdom, soul-searching and honoring a person thru days, weeks or months until his very last breath; for every moment in the remains of one's life is good and precious. gentle and lovely

This book is by a Hospice nurse about her experiences with her dying patients. The book is composed of multiple sections each with multiple short chapters, each chapter descibing her encounter with a patient.
It was surprising how much information and sweetness and comfort could be found in each of these brief chapters. Janet writes with such humility and respect for her patients and the human experience. The book is never preachy or snobby or demanding that we believe such and such a thing or act in such and such a way.
This nurse embodies the goal of Hospice and grieving itself, which is to reach acceptance. The author is non-judgmental and simple in her style. There are no big words here or complicated medical or psychiatric terms, but Nurse Wehr conveys very clearly some deep, complicated concepts about death and dying. I especially liked how she explains what Hospice does, and dispells the misconceptions about it. I also loved the chapter about how to explain Death to children.
I was a Hospice volunteer for five years, and have also lost my parents and my father-in-law and mother-in-law (they were my parents, too). All of them had Hospice care at the end. I admit this book made me cry at times, but they weren't tears of despair.
This book was very comforting and I highly recommend it.

I would strongly recommend this book to any one but most especially to those who are leery of the subject of death and dying, who fear what may or may not happen in the last days and hours of a loved one's or their own lives. What you may learn here could be highly reassuring.

Janet Wehr put her heart and soul into this lovely collection of experiences, it is evident. I found it intriguing and interesting. Being a person who has gone through the death and loss cycle several times, in many different scenarios, what I learned from Janet's experience both reassured me and reaffirmed that which I had already learned about helping both myself and others deal with death and dying.

If you are facing the aspect of someone you care for being terminally ill, or have lost a beloved, I feel reading this book will bring serenity to the spirit. Again, enthusiastically recommended.

Good try, but flawed

At first glance, this book looks like the perfect reference to the world of GIJoe: A Real American Hero. Unfortunately, though it is a worthy effort at such a volume, it suffers from some rather serious flaws.

First, and definitely worst, is an attempt to integrate the various disparate GIJoe continuities (prior to Rise of Cobra) into one. This sounds like a good idea, and sometimes works well, such as mentioning the 1970s career of Joseph Colton (the "Original Joe") leading a civilian group called the "Adventure Team," apparently based on the 1970s Adventure Team toys. And, sometimes, seemingly contradictory elements are melded together more flawlessly than might be expected. For example, Bazooka was described in the comic and toyline as "decisive and quick-witted," but was a ludicrous moron in the TV series; here, it says his manner of speech makes him seem stupid and causes others to underestimate him, but he's really quite smart.

The Marvel and Devil's Due continuities work quite well together, since Devil's Due published a continuation of the Marvel series set about a decade later. The trouble comes from trying to integrate these with the 1980s cartoon and the totally unrelated Sigma Six series, as well as the early 2000s Valor vs Venom and Spy Troops series of figures. For example, the bio of Lt Falcon, who was a screw-up in the cartoon, mentions his addiction to a Cobra-produced drug from a later episode of the DiC cartoon (the series that took place after the movie); this is completely incompatible with the noble character as he appeared in the comic. Cobra Commander's biography gives his Marvel origin as a disgruntled former used car salesman, but mentions his Cobra-La origin from the animated movie as a separately-circulated story. This seems like a good way to handle it, except that Roadblock's bio treats GIJoe: The Movie as fact, and specifically refers to Cobra Commander's further mutation from the movie, which simply cannot be made to jive with the more realistic comic version (who has always been 100% human).

Possibly silliest, and most confusing, are the attempts to integrate totally unrelated series that happened to share a name. GIJoe: Sigma Six is referred to as a scaled-down version of the team, but most references seem to place it somewhere in the second year of the Devil's Due series. Valor vs Venom, which didn't even warrant a comic or TV series, appears to take place just prior. It's confusing, and most entries indicate a timeline was worked out to reconcile all this, only it's not anywhere in the book, and some of the entries make little sense (even to GIJoe geeks) without such a reference.

Second, the choices as to who and what are covered in detail are sometimes confusing. There are a few strange omissions. For instance, why would Short-Fuze, a minor character who largely went unused during the entire series, warrant a bio entry as opposed to, say, Airborne, a fan favorite of some importance on the team, or even a character like Shooter, whose importance to the GIJoe origin story only appeared in a later comic? Why give Crystal Ball, widely acknowledged as of trivial importance, an entry but not Croc Master? Why list William "The Refrigerator" Perry (who was only released as a mail-away figure) in the complete roster of Joes, but not mention Sergeant Slaughter? (I can't stand Sergeant Slaughter, but the figure was in continuous production for the longest of any GIJoe, and he played a huge role in the cartoon.) For that matter, why is there no complete roster for Cobras?

Third, there are no artwork credits anywhere in the book. Given how heavily this work rests on reproduced comic book covers and images, this is a shame. There are some beautiful images here, and these talented artists deserve at least the mention of their names on an appendix page. For that matter, there's no "real world" information at all. This wouldn't have to be in-depth, and would be more useful than the "bonus material" of two previously-published short stories from IDW Publishing's new GIJoe comics.

Perhaps I've spoken at too much length about the flaws, though. If you're a GIJoe fan wanting a quick reference guide, or even a novice wanting a basic "roadmap" of what's come before, this book is well worth picking up. The pros of this book do indeed outweigh the cons. Just don't expect it to be the perfect, complete guide that the title "The Essential Guide" would indicate.

A good overview but not as in-depth as one might have hoped

Those hoping for a "Transformers Ultimate Guide" style book (one that seperately looks at the Joe cartoons, comics and figures) are out of luck. The bios of the various Joes are good, borrowing more from Marvel with attempts to mix in the cartoon histories as well. That can be tricky due to contradicting viewpoints and focusing more on some characters than others doesn't come off as well. Many might be confused at the different histories depending on how they know Joe and while the artwork is good, it doesn't line up with some of the stories. Still, it's good to get the concise histories of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow and the rundown of the various vehicles used by both sides (including bases like the Pit) is a good addition. I also enjoyed the rundown of missions, most those multi-part epics from the cartoon show but also a couple from the comics. However, the sudden shift to a new "GI Joe Origins" comic is a bit jarring and there's no mention of the movie. So a good in-depth look at the Joes but not quite the overall analysis of the franchise one might expect.

Amazing facts about the Black race and human history!

This is certainly one of the best books I've ever read. It encapsulates the accomplishments of the Black race

What I like most about this book is the fact that the author quotes from credible sources to establish his point of view. He claims that Stonehenge and other magalithic remains in Europe were built by Blacks, and indeed, Irish tradition mentions the Formorians, Black giants who sailed to Ireland from North Africa.

The author claims that the Moors who conquered Iberia in 711 a.D. were Blacks. This is true. In fact, during the Middle Ages, all Blacks were referred to as Moors. This is the reason Shakespeare refers to Othello as a Moor and Black. In the "Song of Roland," composed in the Middle Ages, the Moors are described as being "blacker than blackest ink."

Among many other amazing revelations, this book touches on the Black roots of Alexander Pushkin, Beethoven, Alexandre Dumas, Haydn etc.

While Mary Lefkowitz claims that Hannibal was "Semitic," she fails to touch on the coins of Hannibal portraying him as Black. The Phoenicians were simply the Black Canaanites, as this book has proved.

According to this book Jesus Christ was Black. This is true since the Black Hebrews of Palestine were different from the White Pharisees, Sadducees and Gentiles.

This should be introduced to the public schools around the country. I think it would give our youth a great deal of pride to know that black Africans have made a tremendous contribution to the world and to mankind. Plus, people from other countries may then compare what contributions their ancesters have made to better mankind. Not many have made as much. Infact, I could not find any contrabutions from Spain. Other than exploring around the world and polinating (raping) distroying, slaving and killing anyone or thing in their path.

About the Author
K. ERIC DREXLER published the first scientific paper on molecular nanotechnology in 1981. In addition, he taught the first course on the subject (at Stanford University) and chaired the first two conferences. He is currently President of the Foresight Institute and a Research Fellow of the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing. He wrote Nanosystems while a Visiting Scholar at the Stanford University Department of Computer Science and continues to lecture at universities and corporations in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. He received his doctoral degree in molecular nanotechnology from MIT.

A rare Fifth Star simply for its place in history.

Finally we may play with the "building blocks of matter" we've been hearing so much about. Here is an instruction manual, detailing the Elements, and their Interactions, while at the same time suggesting possible Design Models for construcion.
Curious about the subject?
Start with Drexler's Engines of Creation, instead. Maybe some other collections of theoretical applications to whet your appetite. Come back to this when you begin to see a bigger picture.
Know some, want to know more?
Definately read. But be warned, it is quite techincal when it is not being necessarily vague. This is a halmark. The basis of this book was Drexler's thesis for his doctorate in Molecular Nanotechnology, the first awarded (MIT 1991, I believe).
Serious about the topic?
You already have access to a copy...or should.
You might very well be able to download significant portions from Foresight's website (it's an org.anization, not a com.mercial); but I would suggest supporting them with at least the price of the book. They seem to be committed to developing this Potential responsibly.

Comprehensive treatise on nanotechnology theory

An outstanding book exploring the possibilities of nanotechnology in amazing detail. Dense textbook equations and charts fill the pages, but somehow Drexler's well-written prose transitions between complex concepts and offers explanations of technical points.
