A quite good book about stretching.......

Jean Frenette is an amazing martial artist, and in this book he shows you streching exercises for combat sports. You will learn proper warm up, breathing etc. Stretching programs are also included.
I think this book makes confusing... A lack of describtion for each exercise is a big disadventage!!!!
All in all, this book is very good and the author has perfect flexibility!! However this is not the best book (about this issue)on the market.....

I think Jean Frenette is the best stretching instructor. I tried using almost all stretching programs/books/instructional tapes of different Martial Arts Champions/Instructors but nothing gives me not only safe but effective results.

About the Author
Leonard B. Glick is a cultural anthropologist with a medical degree and a doctorate in anthropology. He is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Hampshire College and is the author of Abraham's Heirs: Jews and Christians in Medieval Europe (1999).


J. Mitchell Miller (Ph.D., University of Tennessee, 1996) is a Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he serves as Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice. He has also served two years (2000-2002) as a Visiting Professor at Moscow International University in Russia and as Director the Graduate Studies Program in Drugs and Addictions at the University of South Carolina (2002-2006). He was Editor-in-Chief of the 3-volume Encyclopedia of Criminology (Taylor & Francis, 2005) and has authored or co-authoredfive textbooks andone monograph and46 articles and book chapters. He hasalsoserved as Editor oftwo journals (Journal of Crime & Justice, 1999-2002; Journal of Criminal Justice Education, 2005-2009). The National Criminal Justice Honor Society named him National Advisor of the Year in 2002, and he is actively involved in both national and regional criminology and criminal justice associations (ASC, ACJS, ASA, etc.).

A Great Teaching Resource...

"Criminology", co-authored by Leonard Glick and J. Mitchell Miller, is a comprehensive and well-written entry-level guide to the complex and controversial topic of criminology as practiced in the United States. "Criminology" is specifically organized to facilitate the work of the instructor and the student.

Each of fourteen chapters covers basic definitions, theory, and observed behavior for some category of criminal activity and/or the police, judicial, and correctional response. The basic text presents narrative, graphics, and focused text boxes, augmented by excerpts from a variety of authors with more indepth analysis of various problems. Each chapter comes with self-testing questions to reinforce learning. The layout of each chapter easily translates to a classroom presentation.

Presentation for the most part is even-handed, in recognition that criminology does not have perfect analyses or answers for what is very complex human behavior. Multiple theories of criminology are presented without predetermined selection of a single answer. Contrasting arguments for and against incarceration, capital punishment, and punitive sentences for drug-related offenses provide a good basis for further exploration in a classroom or seminar environment. The focus is on the United States, although some anecdotal context is provided for other nations. The text has been updated to include consideration of crimes of recent or renewed emphasis such as international terrorism and human trafficking.

"Criminology" is very highly recommended as a great teaching resource for college entry-level criminology classes.

I needed this book for class, but didn't want to pay the hefty price tag attached to it. So I ended up buying used on Amazon for the first time. I saved well over $100 doing this. The book was in great condition. No pen marks or highlights. Definitely recommend!! I cant tell enough people how much money you save when you use Amazon as an alternative for buying and renting textbooks.

Too many mistakes

This book has an extraordinary number of errors. The synthesis of methamphetamine (scourge of the west) is described according to a method used by bikers in the seventies. Rape is defined as forcible sex between a man and a woman. One of the causes of violence is a high sugar diet. Feminism can lead to violence. Descriptions of criminal law are weak and full of errors. This is a bad book.

Insightful and Helpful in Learning to Discover God's Voice

Robert Morris has a down-to-earth and up-to-heaven way of writing. I read this book after reading his "The God I Never Knew," hoping to find some helpful and practical information on listening for and to God's voice. I was not disappointed. I am one of those highlighter people, and I actually had to restrain myself from highlighting every word in the book. This is a very well-written and compelling guide to deepening a relationship with God through discovering his voice and actually having two-way conversations. I do not come from a charismatic background but I was open and eager to learn about the role of the Holy Spirit, and I was totally blessed and informed.

So far, so good, in laws are enjoying it!

So, this was a requested gift for my father in law and mother in law. It looks like it's a good one. Maybe we'll get it someday too (if I ever get a chance to read, that is)! Anyway, they had seen it advertised on a TV show, so I checked Amazon knowing it would be less expensive than the offers on the shows on TV. Plus, with Prime, they'd get it quickly. If I hear anything they don't like, I'll update this, but I doubt that. I know the author is a good teacher/preacher as I've seen him, so no worries on that.

Well balanced information

A great first book to introduce the reader to falconry. Oakes does an excellent job teaching the reader how rewarding training a red tailed hawk is, while being very clear that they will be spending many hours every single day with the bird for at least a few months. He gives detailed information about the gear and housing requrements to prevent someone from trapping a hawk if they don't have the necissary equipment.

It has made me want to become a falconer ever more, but I have realized that I am at least a year away from having the time to dedicate to the project. I trust everyone who reads this book will spend a lot of time preparing for the day that they become a flaconer.

Not a Manual

I'm not sure if I dislike this book, or if I really enjoyed it. I didn't learn much from it that I hadn't our couldn't learn just by visiting themodernapprentice.com, and in fact, the website has much more substance for those who are actually studying with the purpose of becoming an apprentice. I've noticed a few differing opinions between the above-mentioned website and The Falconer's Apprentice, and it is nice to learn those things... but again, getting involved in the practice I would learn those things much more intimately. The book is very vague, and I read it in two hours. I had the wrong idea of what it was when I purchased it. It's very short, vague, and specific in its purpose.

With that out of the way, though, it was a very personal book. The Author offers you a glimpse into the sport in a way my previous research had not yet given me. He stresses things, such as consistency and humanity for all creatures (not just your hawk), as important in Falconry. I learned that it may be necessary to dispatch a rabbit in the field. He made quick work of a few of my other preconceived notions, and for that, the purchase was worth it to me. I would not say this book is necessary, I felt it was more like a light read that just strengthened my desire to become a falconer. The codes of conduct listed in the appendices were a focal point for me.

Excellent book for those who are interested in learning more about falconry or those who are just starting out with their first passage Red Tailed Hawk. William Oakes presents his material in a very easy to understand manner for the new apprentice, and as one reads his book, it is very evident that he has a very strong respect and love for these beautiful, majestic birds. A must read for anyone interested in learning more about falconry and raptors!

Somethings are GREAT -- others, not so much...

As an college educator in computer science, I am always on the lookout for new programming textbooks that might be helpful for beginning students. Often times, books that are "designed for kids" tend to be awesome for adults as well.

Here's what I like about this book:
- Designed for first-time beginners who know absolutely nothing about programming!
- Teaches the fundamental basics of Python that are needed to create various, fun projects.
- Beautifully illustrated with visual examples. The book just makes you "want" to learn how to program, especially the first chapters!
- Focuses more upon GUI programming, such as how to work with Turtle Graphics, Tkinter, PyGame, etc.

What needs improved:
- Teaches Python 2 (instead of 3 -- the current version).
- Requires users to install PyGame (a game development feature), which works well for Windows-based PCs, but not so much for Mac users.
- Some chapters focus so strongly on making the experience "fun" that the author tends to gloss over important programming concepts without giving them the attention that's needed to ensure the reader adequately grasps them.

Overall, it's a fun book that's helpful to beginners. Yet, there are aspects that should of been improved in order to make it awesome.

Excellent way to learn Python for youngsters – and adults.

The publisher says this a book is intended to help 11 to 15 year olds who want to learn how to program in Python on their own. This is true. Author Craig Richardson does an exemplary job of making programming in Python – and I am not being loose with my words – easy to learn. Not only for kids, but for adults as well. I would instantly recommend this book as an introduction to programming for people with no prior experience in the art.

I like Richardson’s approach. He has created 10 “adventures” to guide the learner through their mastery of basic programming concept and the Python language. (By the way, Richardson specifically prohibits the use of Python 3: for this book, only Python v2.7.8 or later will work.)

The “adventures” are oriented toward simple games which probably has the greatest chance of keeping younger minds involved and won’t bore adults either. All the code is very clearly laid out and is also downloadable. Videos are also available for some topics. (I haven’t worked every code example, so I can’t comment on bugs, if any.) Lots of illustrations as well.

One thing Richardson does that most Python teachers don’t is introduce Tkinter, the module used for creating Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) very early in the game. Many Python instructional don’t mention Tkinter, assuming their readers will use only Command Line driven programs. I think Richardson’s approach, especially for younger learners, is much better and will help keep reader interest.

This is a fun book. It makes learning Python easy and entertaining.

True, Adventures In Python covers mostly basic stuff, much of which will not be terribly useful in the real world. But this book will definitely help the motivated reader become comfortable with bossing the computer around through coding and does provide an understanding of Python.

And, as I said, adults new to programming would find this book useful as well.

FUN/Instructional Guide to Python Programming for Adolescents and Adults. Cross Platform Windows/MAC/Linux/Raspberry Python 2.6+

This instructional and FUN introduction to Python programming aimed at adolescents but appropriate to anyone with minimal programming background has much to recommend it. It has FUN graduated examples beginning with Installation, Hello World-type programs and Turtle Graphics, using graphics for games with the TKinter graphical extrensions, Pygame ending with highly interactive graphical games.
The book is divided into 10 increasingly advanced projects all of which are fun and cross-platform.

The author has taken special care that all of the examples are cross platform. Installation instructions are included for Windows 7 & 8, MAC OS X,
Linux and Raspberry Pi. The author has chosen to use the Python 2.6+ rather than a version of the 3.0+ stream. I believe the reason for this is the wider availability of programming environments and Libraries--indeed most scientific applications of Python default to 2.6+ as certain scientific libraries are not available yet in a 3.0+ release.

About the Author
Kai N. Lee is Rosenburg Professor of Environmental Studies, emeritus, at Williams College, and program officer for science at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. Kai was trained as an experimental physicist at Columbia and Princeton Universities. He taught environmental studies and political science at the University of Washington before going to Williams to direct its Center for Environmental Studies. In both institutions, he taught the introductory course in environmental studies that forms the basis of this book. Kai is the author of Compass and Gyroscope (Island, 1993), a book on adaptive management that has been widely used in graduate courses in environmental science. In his grant making at the Packard Foundation, Kai is developing related means of linking knowledge with action. He has served on more than a dozen committees of the National Research Council, advising government agencies on a range of policies where scientific issues play a critical role. He is currently vice-chair of the NRC’s committee to advise the U.S. Global Change Research Program. Earlier in his career Kai was a White House Fellow and he represented Washington state on the Northwest Power Planning Council.

William R. Freudenburg was Dehlsen Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), at the time of his death in 2010. He studied at the University of Nebraska, his native state, and at Yale University, earning a Ph.D. there in 1979. He held professorships at Washington State University and the University of Wisconsin before arriving in UCSB in 2002. Bill pursued scholarly interests in risk analysis and rural sociology, and he served as president of the Rural Sociology Society. A popular and devoted teacher, Bill was co-founder of the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences. He was a prolific author, most recently as coauthor of two studies of the Gulf of Mexico coast,Catastrophe in the Making: The Engineering of Katrina and the Disasters of Tomorrow (Island Press, 2009) and Blowout in the Gulf: The BP Oil Spill Disaster and the Future of Energy in America (MIT Press, 2010).

Richard B. Howarth is Professor of Environmental Studies at Dartmouth College and the Editor-in-Chief of Ecological Economics. After receiving an A.B. in Biology and Society from Cornell University in 1985, he pursued an M.S. in Land Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1987) and a Ph.D. from the Energy and Resources Program at the University of California, Berkeley (1990), where he specialized in the economics of natural resources and sustainable development. Prior to his arrival at Dartmouth in 1998, he held appointments with the Environmental Energy Technologies Division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and with the Environmental Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has published widely on topics that include theories of intergenerational fairness; the economics of energy efficiency; climate stabilization policy; the valuation and governance of ecosystem services; and the links between economic growth, environmental degradation, and human well-being.

I got this book as required for an environmental studies class. It may just be that I have taken an environmental science class prior to reading this text book, but the book seemed to lack new or interesting information that might be considered beyond common knowledge. At times the text even seemed excessively vague and repetitive. Some of the only new information I received from this book was the foundations and progressive development of the environmental movement in the United States. For somebody who lacks any real information about environmental matters- this book may be a good place to start, but if you have any background on the matter- I would recommend finding a more complex textbook.

Ughhh! Avoid this textbook!

If your college professor is planning to use this textbook, drop the class and find something else in which to enroll. Since enrolling in my Environmental Studies program, this has been the absolute worst textbook I have been required to use.

The authors write the entire book in essay format and make far too many generalizations for a college-level textbook. Without more concrete examples, the material is extremely dry. Worse, much of the text contains the authors' opinions where they are trying to persuade the student to their line of thinking instead of allowing the reader to form his/her own opinion based on facts and science. Perhaps the most annoying thing about this textbook is the authors' repetitive use of terms such as "most successful species" and world without edges." The redundancy as you move from chapter to chapter is blatant and extremely annoying to read.

In my opinion, this textbook is the product of three people with PhDs who perceive their education as a qualification to write a book and pass it off as a good piece of educational literature. They definitely prove one thing... just because you have a PhD does not mean you are qualified to write a book.

Please professors, if you are considering a textbook for a sustainability class, steer clear of this one!
