I was asked to read an ARC of this book prior to its release. While Jodi Vaughn is a paranormal romance writer, she proves with Saddle Up she can write any sub-genre of romance with ease. Swoon-worthy cowboy, Derrek Diaz, wants to make his ranch a success, but has no desire to have a successful romance after being burned by the town rich girl. Nurse Emily Smith leaves the big city of Dallas for the anonymity of the small town known as Somewhere, after an emotionally abusive ex-boyfriend destroys her heart and her credit. Broken ribs after a drunken fall off his horse brings Derrek into the Emergency Room during Emily's shift. She only wants to heal his ribs and he only wants to help a damsel in financial distress. Soon their attraction is too much for either to resist and both nurse and cowboy are nursing one another's hearts with the healing power of love. Jodi Vaughn's love stories make this new author a must read for everyone fan of to-die for heroes and the women who win their hearts.

Okay enough read

Was a typical romance story, two burned by romance persons finding each other. It was a simple read. Not a lot with the relationship building or character building really. It was just there. Then it was just done.
What I had issue with in this story - If you're going to have a story that has basis in reality, then have scenarios that makes sense.
Why would a hospital who takes care of their employees continue to allow rental of an apartment complex from a man who is as despicable as this landlord was? Don't see it happening.
Nor can he kicked her out before her lease is up. He does not have the legal ability to do so.
The bank calling and disclosing Emily's business to her boyfriend is a breach of confidentiality. No bank in Dallas is going to disclose that kind of information over the phone to anyone but Emily or her husband, not a boyfriend.
It also is not reality that the bank person would say that there could be no payment arrangements. That's just bull crap. The bank would have no choice but to not only except the money that she did save up, but to also accept payment in the form of arrangements. They could take it to court, likely have to go through mediation first, and they would lose the argument against accepting payments.
This same bank person, who disclosed Emily's private information over the phone, then says she can't tell Emily who paid off her loan because it is private? Seriously?

Emily Smith was forced to start a new life after the man she loved betrayed her. Somewhere, TX is the place she chose to begin again. Being a nurse she meets Derrek Diaz when he comes in after falling off his horse. Due to her past problems she is in desperate need of a place to live. Overhearing her difficulty Derrek offers his place as a way for her to help nurse his ribs. When their feelings for each other goes beyond nurse and patient Derrek steps in to help Emily out of the problem from her past hoping that she'll want a future with him.

The joy of op amps

I love this book, before jumping into op amps chapter 1 uses amplifier configurations comprised of discrete components to form building blocks, which once put together form an op amp. This approach allows for an understanding of the signals from input to output. Om amps start on chapter 2 analyzing characteristics and then configurations, which are described clearly with all the necessary equations to allow you to customize each configuration to your particular need.
The author uses inexpensive op amps, which allows the reader to build circuits and experiment without fear of damaging an expensive piece of silicon. Go head order a hand full of inexpensive op amps and enjoy this book. Once you you feel comfortable with the circuits in this book, you can move to higher performance more expensive op amps.

Have fun experimenting and designing your own circuits!

On the side note you will need some basic electricity background to appreciate this book. At least you should feel comfortable with ohm's law, kvl, kcl, voltage divider rule and how passive components behave under AC and DC. Some basic circuit analysis also will help, but you might get away without it to get started, for more advanced circuits it will be necessary.

Crispin was active in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and served as the chair of Writer Beware, SFWA’s “scam watchdog” volunteer group. She died in 2013.

Great backstory, average story telling and writing.

There is some great information in this book as you get the backstory of one of the pillars of the Star Wars universe for the first time, and that information is admittedly very interesting and often telling, but overall I found this book (and series) to be a pretty big let down. The writing is not the calibre that is probably deserved by such a pivotal storyline. The constant focus is on a love story that personally felt contrived and inconsistent, and seems to wear more thin as the series progresses, and the push to have Han use lines from the movie in situations where they were perhaps not always the most natural was grating at times.

Unfortunately it's a must read for Star Wars enthusiasts for obvious reasons, but I regularly found it a struggle, especially as the series wears on. The first book was probably the pick of the trilogy.

A Somewhat Flawed but Good Start to an Excellent Trilogy

Before reading The Paradise Snare, I made a pledge to myself to read only the best Star Wars novels out there. Having exhausted myself on Zahn and Stackpole, I decided to give A.C. Crispin's series a try. The trilogy was based on my favorite Star Wars character, after all, who had been completely neglected in the prequels. I thought this would be exactly what I was looking for.

Obviously I had high expectations going into this novel, and they were quickly tossed aside within the first chapter. Crispin (a veteran of the Sci Fi genre) constantly used strange phrasings, like "gee force" instead of "G-force", and opened the book with the most ridiculous Wookie to Human dialog I've ever had the misfortune of reading. The whole thing was cringe inducing. And my lord, I've never read a female author so bad at creating female dialog!

But that all turned around though in the second chapter. The story really stands out among the huge pile of Star Wars novels because it's so different than the norm. Where other stories aimed to be epic, The Paradise Snare focuses on a small group of characters, and uses small events to change those characters. The antagonist of the novel isn't an evil Emperor and his underlings, but rather the concept of addiction, which was refreshing.

Crispin is at her best when the book strays from Star Wars conventions, and her worst when attempting to fit into the extended universe. Countless references are aimed at hardcore Star Wars fans, and these just feel shoehorned in. I didn't need to read "I have a bad feeling about this" eight times. I didn't need to learn why "scruffy" was a major insult to Han. And I certainly didn't need a specific favorite character to rear her head in an absolutely meaningless appearance. Oddly enough, I DID enjoy one of Han's many aliases: Jenos Idanian. Obviously an anagram for Indiana Jones.

That being said, AC Crispin did a terrific job of molding Han into the character we all know and love in unconventional and indirect ways. She showcased Han slowly growing, rather than just throwing out simple answers for why he is the way he is. She makes you work to understand Han, something I wasn't at all expecting from this.

All in all, I really enjoyed the book. It's absolutely in my top 10 Star Wars books, and I look forward to reading The Hutt Gambit soon. Han Solo has always been my favorite Star Wars character (and therefore my favorite fictional character), and I still think it was a great injustice to completely ignore him in the prequel trilogy. Obviously I feared that The Paradise Snare and The Han Solo Trilogy wouldn't be able to capture the magic behind the character, but it did. AC Crispin gives a back story to one of the greatest characters of all time that, in my opinion, could easily outdo anything George Lucas could concoct.

Insightful look at Han Solo's past

It's time in my chronological re-reading of the Star Wars novels to leave the prequels behind and delve into the stories centered around the original trilogy of films. The journey starts with volume one of the Han Solo Trilogy, titled The Paradise Snare and written by A. C. Crispin. It's interesting to read a book set during the time immediately before A New Hope, as largely this period has been left clean and will be tackled in several upcoming projects, including a live-action TV series from Lucasfilm and the Dark Horse comic series Dark Times.

Since 1977, Han Solo has been a favorite character of millions of fans worldwide. He's easy to understand and relate to when we first encounter him in the Mos Eisley cantina, and his development through the films is one of the most interesting plot threads in the saga. Crispin definitely took a gamble in accepting the assignment to try and flesh out this character with a detailed three-book backstory. I'm pleased to see how well that gamble paid off.

Crispin perfectly captures Han's attitude and dialogue; her younger version walks like Han and talks like Han as we know him from the films. We join up with Han in his late teens as he seeks to escape his life upon the opportunistic vessel The Trader's Luck. Crispin does a great job of working Han's backstory into the tale via flashbacks and various hints dropped in contemporary conversations. As the book progresses, we learn many things about what forged Han into the hardened rogue we know and love, such as where his loner attitude stems from, why he lives a life on the wrong side of the law but refuses to condone slavery, how he accumulated his comprehensive piloting skills, and who influenced his fondness for Wookiees.

Crispin writes in a very descriptive style and shows a knack for interjecting subtle humor into dialogue. The book is slower paced than many Star Wars novels, taking its time to establish characters both familiar and new (mostly new), and kicking off storylines to take us through the next two books. Crispin's primary new location, the drug-producing planet Ylesia, is evocatively written and she spends the time to flesh it out and make it feel like a real place rather than a thin backdrop for action sequences.

There are several interesting new characters introduced in the book. The two most important are Muuurgh, a huge feline humanoid assigned to keep an eye on Han while he works for the spice lords on Ylesia, and Bria Tharen, a beautiful young spiritual seeker who plays a large role in forging Han's every-man-for-himself ethos. I loved Muuurgh's grammar instruction from Han and his role as a sort of proto-Chewbacca. Bria is a key part of Han's story and their relationship veers in some unexpected directions as the book progresses.

It was fun to revisit Coruscant after spending such significant amounts of time there reading all the prequel novels. Alderaan's inclusion was another nice touch and it inadvertently pairs up well with the time we spent there in Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, the novel that chronologically comes right before this one. The introduction of Thracken Sal-Solo is a creepy foreshadowing of the man who will cause the Solo family so many annoyances and frustrations in the years to come.

The Paradise Snare is a promising start to the Han Solo Trilogy. While the story does not present the epic scope of some of the prequel stories I've read recently, it is a very well thought out and smart story that brings an already vivid character to even brighter life.

Dave Barry, that indefatigable yukmeister, writes terrific humor columns (never mind that they all begin to sound the same if you read him regularly). He's the funniest friend you never had. If you read his column--better yet, if you don't read his column--get your hands on a copy of The Book of Bad Songs.

Barry's style is so effortless that you can't resist quoting him. This bit is from his mock-hortatory introduction: "If you keep reading, you're going to have all kinds of bad songs waking up and creeping around inside your brain, refusing to die, just like the corpses in the movie The Night of the Living Dead ..."

Humor is a genre that usually works best when heard rather than read, and Dave Barry's is one wisecracking, sidesplitting example of an [HighBridge] audio book that can make you howl with laughter. The printed book is also a laughfest, but there is no guarantee you will have the same comic delivery as narrator Mike Dodge. Barry, a syndicated newspaper columnist, conducted a survey in which he asked people to name the songs they most despised. He was inundated with more than 10,000 responses. A great book for first-time Dave Barry readers

I'd never read a single Dave Barry book or column until I picked up this small, but ultimately powerful book. As a result, I'm a Dave Barry fan, and what's more, I now know that I am not the only person who thinks that "In the Year 2525" should be considered cruel and unusual punishment.
Dave Barry didn't set out to write this book; it began as a column with reader participation for "Worst Songs." Dave's mailbag was flooded with replies, with people complaining about artists from many styles. Everyone from Neil Diamond to the Doobie Brothers gets it in this book...
It's critical to know that if you truly want to appreciate this book, you must have been exposed not just to "light rock," but also to 50s teenage tragedy songs, classic rock station fodder (look out Iron Butterfly), and the triad of Anka-Diamond-Manilow. If you can actually SING part of the songs in the book, it'll add to the laugh factor by at least 150%. I couldn't agree more when Dave points out the utter silliness of the lyric: "Song she sang to me, Song she brang to me." (Thank you, Neil Diamond) I heard this playing while waiting for a table at a local restaurant, and people must've thought I'd hit my head because I broke out in hysterics when I heard it play over the speakers...
Dave rips on everybody, so I don't recommend it if your loyalty to a group or singer is incredibly strong. Bear in mind that this isn't just Dave; it's leagues of hassled souls who will just go nuts if they even hear one note of "Muskrat Love."
It's inexpensive, easy to carry, and hilarious. This book will make you want to try his other titles, and you won't be sorry when you do! Like another reviewer said, who needs an ab machine when you've got this book??

Someone left the cake out in the rain...

Back in 1992, Dave Barry, in one of his syndicated newspaper columns, wondered why radio doesn't play more "good songs," and mentioned some of the songs he doesn't like, saying (among other things) that he wouldn't mind if radio stopped playing ballads by Neil Diamond. This column generated a heated response, with some readers defending Neil Diamond and some agreeing with Dave. Some readers also wrote to voice their opinions on artists and songs THEY didn't like. Realizing he'd struck a nerve, Dave announced the "Bad Song Survey," asking readers to write in and tell him which songs they really, REALLY hate. The response to this survey was so overwhelming, Dave compiled the top vote-getters as the achingly-funny "Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs". I haven't laughed so hard while reading a book in a VERY long time! In most cases, the comments by Dave, and numerous survey voters, are right on target.
In addition to the expected, much-maligned vote-getters like "MacArthur Park," "Muskrat Love," "Feelings" and "I Write The Songs," this book takes on a diverse group of songs which includes "American Pie," "I'm Too Sexy," "In The Year 2525," "Achy, Breaky Heart," "I've Never Been To Me," "The Candy Man," "Dreams of The Everyday Housewife" (This song was a big vote-getter in a section called "Songs Women Really Hate"), and many more.
No artist is impervious to this book's sword, not even Elvis ("Do The Clam") or The Beatles (the four-hour, er, minute "na-na-na-na" section of "Hey Jude".) Since so many songs are mentioned in this book, it's almost inevitable that a song or two which you happen to like, will be included here. For example, I like America's "A Horse With No Name," but even I have to admit that the lyrics quoted by Dave are pretty lame (I'd have included "Ventura Highway" instead, since it features the TRULY lame line about "Alligator lizards in the air".)
I agree with other reviewers who have said that this book is too short. Many songs that richly deserve to be included here (Cher's "Half-Breed" immediately comes to mind), are absent. Perhaps Dave could give us a sequel (or two.)

DON'T Buy The Audio Version!

Now I know how much of comedy is TIMING. This tape was HORRIBLE! What might have been funny if read by Dave Barry, or even if I read it myself (if I'd gotten the book), was root-canal-like painful read by Mike Dodge, whose delivery reminds me of every safety training video I've ever heard.
The producers must have known how un-funny his delivery made the material, as they even added "pa-da" drum staccatos to let us know when a joke was being made. If you love Dave Barry, DON'T buy this tape - it'll kill you to hear the material so butchered.
