By any definition, The Infinite Day is a triumphant conclusion to The Lamb Among the Stars series. Since this is the final book in this series, if you’ve been reading it, you’re going to keep reading it. And if you haven’t, why not? Hopefully, this final review will help persuade you.

When you’ve been reading about a storyline and specific characters for over a thousand pages, there are certain things that are necessary to make a satisfying conclusion.

First of all, there has to be a significant payoff to the main storyline. The Infinite Day pays it off and gives back change. Every single element is resolved satisfactorily and then some. You want drama? It’s here. Massive confrontation between good and evil? It’s here. Significant sci-fi elements all tied in together? Ditto. This climax is mind-blowing.

Second of all, there has to be a satisfactory resolution for each major character’s “arc.” In this series, there have been two primary protagonists—Merral D’Avanos and Vero—along with two major antagonists—Margrave Lezaroth and Lord-Emperor Nezhuala. Each one of them come to a very specific resolution, as do a number of the supporting cast.

And third... it’s not enough to have a major dramatic climax. There must be an ending—a very real conclusion that leaves us satisfied and happy about it all. In this case, The Infinite Day is beautiful. Eternity is a subject that has often been poorly portrayed in fiction. The Bible tells us that our minds can’t even imagine the things God has prepared for us. So why is it so few authors have even bothered to let their imaginations run wild? After all, our wildest imagination just isn’t wild enough. It’s even better than that. Chris Walley has not been afraid to let his imagination be set free, and he’s given us a truly inspiring vision, one that I’m sure I’ll be re-reading frequently. . . . About the Author
Born in Wales, Chris Walley grew up in northern England. He studied earth sciences at university and has a doctorate in geology. He taught at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon from 1980 to 1984 and then returned to Wales and spent ten years as a consultant with the oil industry. He began writing in the late eighties and had two novels, Heart of Stone and Rock of Refuge, published under the pseudonym of John Haworth. In 1994, along with his family, Chris returned to Lebanon to teach again at AUB. In 1998, he came back to Wales and began writing again. He is currently fitting his writing in between teaching geology, environmental science, and geography at a local college. Chris and his wife live in an old cottage on the edge of Swansea.

The best trilogy I have ever read.

Incredible. I almost feel that there is no point in reading any other sci-fi book after reading the epic brilliance of Chris Walley in "The Infinite Day." Reading any other book now would be like eating dry stale bread after a ten course meal. It is a shame so many other lesser books and authors are so shamlessly promoted and this epic classic seems to have had none at all. C.S.Lewis sci-fi does not even come close to this groundbreaking, epic, instant clasic. I was at times moved, shocked, affirmed, horrified, excited, anxious, satisfied, elated, triumphant, depressed, angry, disbelieving, challenged, convicted... need I say more (I could). The series was so unpredictable, creative, and exciting. Yet challenging and thought provoking. I think I will read the whole series all over again.

A worthy, satisfying conclusion

First of all, for those who have found this book, but haven't yet looked at _The Shadow and Night_ and _The Dark Foundations_, please do so now, as they are the first books in the series.

Back? Good.

We see ever more in this book the changes in the people of the Assembly: on Farholme the shift in government from collegial committee to autocracy has culminated in bureaucracy. At the heart of the Assembly, factions flourish, arguments abound, and many are dissatisfied with the person in charge for being too weak to unite people behind him. What I found most interesting, though, were the revelations about the people of the Dominion: just as those of the Assembly never were fully good, those of the Dominion (and the True Freeborn) were not fully evil. So the Assembly when falling looks more and more like normal politics today, the Dominion looks increasingly like something that today's society could turn into, and between them, not even human, is Betafor, provoking questions about the sentience of intelligent machines, the ethics of dealing with them, and the ethics of them dealing with humanity.

Ultimately, this is a story about the societies, about the people in them and the choices they make, about the consequences of those choices. The science fiction setting allows for these subjects to be raised in interesting ways.

For those who want a direct comparison, this series has much better prose and pacing than the _Left Behind_ books, and aside from issues of setting (i.e. the setting is this way, so these events had to happen in history), the theology should not be objectionable at all to those who agree with the theology presented in the _Left Behind_ series.

All in all, a wonderful, thrilling end to a thought-provoking series.

Wonderful book in excellent condition. Christian science-fiction. This book really made me stop and think about all the consequences of our actions and our spirituality. It was very well written, and very thoughtfully written. I wish all Christians could read this series and enjoy the spirit of the Lamb Among The Stars. Not preachy- fun to read, but the philosophy of the universe being all Followers is unique and made me stop and think about my own life.

So much Fun

This is a wonderful, entertaining book. I ended up reading sections out loud to my husband as I was laughing so hard. Although I didn't grow up in the neighborhood or specific culture Aylward describes, the characters are familiar, only drawn bolder, brighter than those who inhabited my coming of age years. When you need a pick-me-up, go for this one. You'll be passing it on to friends for sure.

HILARIOUS!

A friend gave me this book and I enjoyed it from start to finish, often reading sections out loud to my husband so we could both laugh out loud! The narrator, Glint Wayward, is a psychologist. As he sees his patients, he is reminded of his own youth and flashbacks to his younger days. This structure works well as it allows the reader to see Glint as both boy and adult and understand how each portion of his life feeds the other. The author knows how to craft a funny, anecdotal story. The characters bounce off the page and each has such a strong personality, even the minor characters. There is a warmth underneath all the hilarity that comes through but not in a sappy, sentimental way. The reader is welcomed into this wacky North Jersey neighborhood, invited to witness all the shenanigans as if he also lived on the block.

Highly recommend this book, not just for boomers, but for anyone who needs a good laugh!

A Very Funny and Entertaining Read!

Glen Aylward nailed it with this witty and entertaining story that everybody can relate to. While psychologist Glint Wayward reflects about his life and childhood, he takes the reader on a hilarious nostalgic tour of northern New Jersey. Although very humorous, the vibrant characters and their heartfelt stories make this book a must read. I would highly recommend it.

About the Author
Charity Tahmaseb has slung corn on the cob for Green Giant and jumped out of airplanes (but not at the same time). She spent twelve years as a Girl Scout and six in the Army; that she wore a green uniform for both may not be a coincidence. These days, she writes fiction (long and short) and works as a technical writer for a software company in St. Paul.

Her short speculative fiction has appeared in UFO Publishing's Unidentified Funny Objects and Coffee anthologies, Flash Fiction Online and Cicada. Darcy Vance is the slacker half of the author duo of Charity Tahmaseb and Darcy Vance. She didn't start writing seriously until she was 40, and didn't publish her first novel until she was 50. Even then, she needed a co-author to get the job done.

While Charity was busy slinging corn for Green Giant and jumping out of airplanes for the Army, Darcy was busy making out with boys and perfecting the art of the doodle. She only makes out with one boy now (her husband) but she still doodles wantonly.

Terrific YA, girl-power chick lit!

Camy Cavanaugh loved playing football as the only girl on the boys' football team until a knee injury sidelined her permanently. In the three years since then, she has attempted to fill her life with her beloved volunteer job as a peer tutor--in a classroom at her high school with a bird's eye view of the football team and the boy she had a huge crush on in middle school, quarterback Gavin Madison, who hasn't talked to her since her injury. In addition to being an excellent tutor, Camy has better than average computer skills, though not as much as her computer-genius best friend, and she uses these skills to access a secret website populated with girl-bashing members of the football team. When Camy passes on information about this website to the most popular girl in school, a cheerleader and Gavin's current girlfriend, it becomes a trigger for a battle of the sexes that Camy is reluctantly drawn into the middle of.

I'm not normally a fan of chick lit, whether adult or teen versions, but this is one of the best I've ever read, for the primary reason that it is both "girl power" and "girls united" in its major themes. Instead of a cliche "Mean Girl" cheerleader persecuting the "geeky" heroine, they become part of a team of four girls, none of which, in the normal course of events, would have ever been friends because they are very different. In fact, they are so different, it rather reminds me of the unlikely band of female friends in the popular TV series of a few years ago, "Army Wives."

Generally speaking, the central premise of YA chick lit is the exact opposite of the central premise of romance. Chick lit encourages girls to believe that romance is a barrier to making their most important life goals happen, that romance reduces you to something less than you can be. In contrast, the central ideal of romance is the idea of finding a true friend and task partner in life, a pairing that expands the possibilities of both partners and makes each far larger in character and accomplishment than would be possible if they were not together. Fascinatingly, this book takes these opposite contentions and satisfies both of them in one story in an extremely well-written and satisfying way. In fact, I'd say the book is brilliantly written.

Too good to put down last night - I finished it in one go!

I wasn't in the mood for a YA novel, but this was next on my to-read pile, so.... I read. Usually, I read a book in a week or so, because my reading time is really limited, but today I'm sitting here a bit bleary-eyed, as I stayed up until almost 1:30 because I had to keep going (and then I had to finish it)! I got reeled in via several characters, many plot twists and finally, just a need to know how everyone was going to grow and sift out by the ending. And I was not disappointed at all - it was worth every bleary-eyed minute of today. (As Camy, the protagonist well knows, this is what coffee is for).

Another reviewer complained about the lack of romance - but this is part of what I loved about it. This is the story of strong young women who are more about respect and what should be due them via their accomplishments than it is a teen romance. And yes, the romance is there, too, and it's fun because most of the match-ups defy stereotypes, but it's so much MORE than that.

The real strengths I see here are the strengths of the female characters. They truly do band together, and they defy their own, and others' stereotypes of how they should act or interact with their school, with each other and with life. Also, this book has a great focus on cyber-bullying, even when the cyber-bullying may be unintentional, and how carefully teens need to tread with social media. This is taken head-on, without a preachy tone.

Okay, but the real deal is the fun - there are literary allusions, smarmy guys (and girls), great role models (older and younger), and quite a bit of laugh-out-loud wit. If you have a strong young woman in your life, I'd highly recommend this book. If you have a strong young man in your life, I might recommend it even more - especially if he complains that he doesn't understand the opposite sex. Whatever - son or daughter or niece or nephew - give a holiday gift that will leave them thinking... and then you have fun reading it when they're done!

Amazing! This book is a sure must read. I read it in one day and I am absolutely in love with this book. There was so much to this book and the characters were so relatable. The plot was easy to follow and this book would strike a cord with probably anyone. I cannot explain how much this book really just... There are no words to how I feel about this book.

About the Author

Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) is a prolific American author best known for his works centered on the lawyer-detective Perry Mason. At the time of his death in March of 1970, in Ventura, California, Gardner was "the most widely read of all American writers" and "the most widely translated author in the world," according to social historian Russell Nye. The first Perry Mason novel, The Case of The Velvet Claws, published in 1933, had sold twenty-eight million copies in its first fifteen years. There have been six motion pictures based on his work and the hugely popular Perry Mason television series starring Raymond Burr, which aired for nine years and 271 episodes.

THE best Perry Mason mystery

So, you've heard about Perry Mason and would like to read one of his books? If you were to read one and only one of the dozens of books Erle Stanley Gardner wrote, "The Case of the Substitute Face" should be it. This book, written in 1938, shows Gardner at the top of his form, after he had fully developed his formula, but before it truly became a formula.
Gardner himself was a top lawyer. "The Case of the Chinese Shopkeepers" could have been one of Gardner's books if he hadn't done it himself. When Gardner heard the DA was going to subpoena one of his clients, a chinese shopkeeper in Oxnard CA, Gardner put another chinese man, who didn't speak English, in his client's store. The court officer then brought the wrong witness to court and, after much confusion, the case was dismissed.

A Perry Mason Classic

Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) wrote more than one hundred novels over the course of his long career. A trial lawyer himself, Gardner's best known creation was Perry Mason, a flamboyant criminal defense attorney who earns his large fees by virtue of a remarkable talent for using the law to uncover the truth on the witness stand.

Although Gardner's Perry Mason novels were formula, Gardner was at the peak of his powers during the 1950s--and at his best he was able to combine a twisty plot, impressive courtroom scenes, and his tendency to staccato dialogue to tremendous effect. Written in 1958, THE CASE OF THE FOOT-LOOSE DOLL offers Gardner at his best.

An attractive secretary in Oceanside, California, Mildred Crest is looking forward to her marriage to the town's most eligible bachelor--but is stunned when he abandons her under highly dubious circumstances. Dazed and distraught, she gets in her car and simply goes as far and as fast as she can... until an unforeseen accident offers her the opportunity to escape the past once and for all.

Or so it seems. But the past has a way of catching up with you--and in Mildred's case it isn't just her own past that she has to worry about. Before too long the question of murder arises, and Mildred finds herself in desperate need of legendary Los Angeles attorney Perry Mason.

Law, police procedure, and science has changed quite a bit since Gardner wrote this book, but that is part of the fun. And in this instance Gardner anticipates the modern phenomena of identity theft in a most unexpected way. Fans will enjoy it and newcomers will find it a delight. Recommended.

Timeless book

Although written in 1938, this book comes across as fresh and exciting as anything written today. Perry Mason, although watered down in the Raymond Burr television version,is a robust man that will go to extreme measures to prove the innocense of his client. He often does this by showing the dishonesty and coercive tactics of the police, a fact still prevalent today.Gardner knew the law well and this book, as every book of his I've had the pleasure to read, has two or three wonderful episodes in which Mason uses his legal genius to further his cause. As a reader I had no idea of who actually committed the crime until the next to last page. Gardner intertwines all the facts masterfully and lets Perry Mason use his command for logic to show us the answers. Great book, and extremely entertaining. Don't let the age of Gardners books dissaude you from reading them. Like fine wine and law books; they get better with age

Should be a movie

Hope it's true that Tom Hanks is developing something for HBO based on this book as it's a tale well told of how a man with deep family roots in the furniture manufacturing industry didn't cash in his chips as cheap imports flooded the US market. He fought back to keep factories going and save US jobs. The author doesn't paint him as a saint or someone with all the answers. If you don't know someone who has lost a manufacturing job because it went overseas or if you don't think those jobs matter to you personally, read this book. Millions of people have lost their jobs as US plants have closed. And those job losses affect everyone in this country one way or another. Reading about international trade agreements may sound like a cure for insomnia. But the author simplifies what happens when unfair trade practices by other countries leave people in this country with no way to feed their families. The book traces the history of the good, bad and ugly of furniture making in the South from its beginnings to the current day when some people question whether it can survive. If everyone doesn't support US manufacturing, lots of other jobs will keep going with it. This book isn't dry statistics about imports and exports. It's about real people struggling to survive and how US industry has to get creative to make that happen.

Having had John Bassett my boss at National Mtn Airy as I had the Northwest territory I was interested in what happened to him in keeping a bedroom furniture co. going with overseas factory competition. Also what has happened in furniture mfg. industry in the 2000's after I retired. I only hope he can keep the co. going. JAY BURMESTER EAST WENATCHEE, WASH.
