Superb writing, accessible and insightful

This is unquestionably the best quality book in a field crowded with poseurs and worse. See particularly the essays by Wilhelm & Kapell, John Shelton Lawrence, Flannery-Dailey & Wagner, and Mizelle & Baker. Accessibly written, enlightening, intellectually stimulating, with touches of humor that delight and intrigue, this book is worth every penny. The primary editor, Kapell, along with the highly competent Dr. Doty, have selected papers which are reflexive, more than capably developed, and multi-faceted in their approaches to the Matrix franchise. Enjoy this literate and worthy book!

Jacking In to the Matrix Franchise is the red pill that makes us understand the world of the Matrix in ways we could not while we were immersed in it, since the volume's essays serve as a comprehensive look into the Matrix franchise, not just the film trilogy composed by The Matrix, The Matrix: Reloaded, and The Matrix: Revolutions. For the Matrix directors, Andy and Larry Wachowski, orchestrated an array of artistic endeavors, including a collection of short anime stories entitled The Animatrix, the video game Enter The Matrix and the The Matrix comics as alternative texts that provide background or side narratives to Reloaded and Revolutions. In the Fall of 2004, the Matrix saga will continue in the form of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, The Matrix Online.
As co-editor William G. Doty claims in the introduction, Jacking In situates the franchise in the context of "the history of thought"-from Romanticism to Postmodernism and the posthuman-and in the context of cinema. Accordingly, the volume is multidisciplinary in scope, though it remains firmly set in the humanities and social sciences, as shown by the authors' credentials: Religion and Culture, Comparative Ethnic Studies, English, Philosophy, History, Anthropology...

About the Author
David Swinson spent the 1980s as a punk rock music promoter and film producer, booking acts like Social Distortion, Nick Cave, John Cale, Chris Isaac and the Red Hot Chili Peppers into clubs and producing spoken word events with Hunter S. Thompson, John Waters and Jim Carroll. He produced the cult classic film Roadside Prophets, starring John Doe of X and Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys and featuring Timothy Leary, John Cusack, David Carradine and Arlo Guthrie. In 1994, Swinson returned to his hometown of Washington DC and joined the police force, where he worked robbery, homicide and narcotics and became one of the city’s most decorated detectives. In 2000 he was promoted to the Special Investigations Bureau/Major Crimes, where he was often called upon by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service, The Treasury Department and The US Attorney’s Office for assistance with sensitive cases. A Detailed Man is Swinson’s first novel.

A Nordic Mystery Set in D.C.

If you enjoy dark, stark Nordic mysteries with introspective, brooding detectives, then you'll enjoy this page-turner set in a wintry Washington, D.C., as much as I did. Detective Simeon's story draws you in from the first page, taking the reader on a twisting, often surprising ride through the streets of our nation's capital. Swinson depicts in fascinating detail the everyday routine of an inner city cop and the toll it takes on the individual trying to serve justice within a rigid system. Even more important, he draws a disturbingly empathetic portrait of the too often stereotyped inhabitants of those streets. I highly recommend this first-time novel--the plot's riveting, the main characteer is fascinating, and you'll learn plenty about police procedures and human nature.

As an avid reader and a writer myself I tend to lean only toward bestsellers; but David Swinson took me for a ride with his first book. From the first sentence, I was enthralled by life in Washington D.C. from the eyes of a homicide detective named Ezra Simeon. The characters he has created, the relationships he builds, the bonds shared by officers of the law, and societal dynamics that exist between criminals and "normal" citizens and the media: Swinson has managed to captivate this reader and hold my life hostage for a full 24 hours, which is how long it took for me to read this book. I could not put it down. Each chapter is woven tightly and succinctly with perfection. For me, it would take a tremendous amount of research to write a book of this magnitude. Swinson's story is a recipe for the human condition, blended with empathy and the politics which exist in the legal system. This book showed me a life I could never comprehend, being a suburban dweller. It took me to places that I very likely will never go and into a world that for most of us would break our spirits and manages to write this marvelously balanced book. I hope there are sequels!A Detailed Man

brooding authenticity and fine description by a detective with a literary bent

David Swinson's well-written narrative takes the reader straight into the streets. Never having been to Washington, I still was completely transported into his gritty world each time I read--and like sipping bourbon, reading this book is better done in small doses, savored and considered. For me, a little went a long way.
His protagonist struggles physically and emotionally with the cop job, while still persuing his cases with dogged persistence in the face of budget cuts, snafus and setbacks. A case of Bell's Palsy adds daily pathos as he drinks with a straw and wonders if he'll make it past his friend Spanns' early and ignominious death.
My only reservation about this well written book is it's pacing--kind of like life, David's detective wanders a bit. The chapters seem a little unrelated to each other, more like standalone essays, and the overall tone is dark if leavened by ironic humor and wry observations.
A worthy read by a detective with a literary way with prose.

Reader's Guide to the Silmarillion

I don't recommend this for two reasons:
First, as a reader's guide, one would expect it to clarify the material. It doesn't. It's largely a retelling in the author's own not especially wonderful style, with only a brief nod to thematic and source material. I don't think this is going to help readers understand the book.
More importantly, the book is full of inaccuracies! The author has chosen to "characterize" characters like Maedhros and Beren, giving his own idea of what's going on in their heads--characterizations that are unsupported in the text. "Maedhros' mind was in a turmoil", things like that. One can make such interpretations in terms of one's personal understanding of the text, but they are not in fact explicit in Tolkien's words. And there are literal inaccuracies, mostly small, but annoying -- "elfin" for "elven", the assertion that none of Feanor's sons were married (not the case), and so on. It's clear that the author isn't familiar with Christopher Tolkien's exegeses, but even allowing for that he has not represented the published Silmarillion text accurately here.

This is less a scholarly work - and more an overview (i.e. like Cliff Notes) for casual readers of Tolkien who don't have the time or devotion to really delve into Tolkien's seminal Middle Earth corpus - the Silmarillion.

Mr. Bellomo has done it yet again. This pocket guide is 207 pages and actually does fit in your back pocket but somehow reads like a full-sized guide. It is filled with color photos throughout. The vast amount of information is presented chronologically and is exhaustively researched, as we have come to expect from this author. Order this and browse around for his other guides to GI Joe and Transformers and his larger guide to Star Wars. After investigating those books, add them to your cart then buy them too.

If you want a comprehensive price guide for vintage star wars toys, do not buy this book. It has only prices for a few select vintage toys from each of the original movies. 80% of this book is dedicated to Star Wars toys from 1990 on. Get Bellomo's vintage guide and do make the same mistake I did.
