About the Author
HILLARY DRUMMOND-SIMPSON is first and foremost a mother who knows firsthand the challenges of raising a successful black man. Her broader perspective comes from being an educator for more than twenty years in three different states, during which she has found the recurring problem of underachieving African-American boys. In 2004, she set about solving the problem by forming Boys to Men, through which black boys are mentored by male leaders in the black community. This group has branches in Newark, New Jersey, and Conyers, Georgia, where Drummond-Simpson currently teaches.

Good Advice

This is a book you can and SHOULD read with your child; particularly the parts on "Advice to Boys." Some inspiring (but not so famous) men are featured, from teachers to entrepreneurs. Black men are doing some great things out there, despite the obstacles (and evening news). Success is not so much about money as it is about confidently making one's own positive path in this life. I think young men will read this and think, "If I was featured in this book, how would my story read?" Can't help but feel "proud to be Black" after reading this book. I will continue to refer to this book for years to come. Parents are encouraged to keep hoping, sacrificing and persevering for our children's sake.

Fantastic Read for Parents as Well

This book sounds like it is written for the black male but it is a also a great read for any parent. I like especially how the featured successful young men give advice to the parents. That was very helpful for me. I also found useful the way the author starts off with her own son and tells her trials as a parent. I could identify a lot with what she said. Most important for today's black man is the advice in the last chapter that tells them how to deal with law enforcement...this information could save our boys' lives!

As a person charged with organizational change at our college (the largest two year technical college in the US, with over seventy thousand students, more than three thousand employees, four campuses, two public television stations, three unions and an annual budget of over 207 million dollars a year), I am always looking for ways to get our employees to see a clearer picture.

We have been using "Teeter Totter" as part of our leadership effectiveness training and have noticed several things. First, of course, is the expected "you want us to what?" and the "this won't take more than five minutes" responses. Second, we see a lot of conscious effort on the part of the teams to actually make the exercise work. Third, we have seen some real glimpses of learning. When using this exercise with our campus leadership teams, I noticed an increase in understanding of the dynamics at play. As team members gingerly stepped onto the board, the member who was acting as the coach for the team kept saying "don't just look at where your opposite is on the board, feel where he or she is. Feel the board, feel your contact with the board, feel the other member and what they are feeling." In the de-brief, the conversation turned quickly to how we can understand what the other members on our team are going through during their daily jobs.

About the Author
Linda Booth Sweeney is at Harvard's Graduate School of Education. Her focus is on assessing a learner's understanding of systems thinking concepts and on developing a taxonomy of systems thinking-related skills, ranging from novice to mastery. She also works with the Society for Organizational Learning as a facilitator and researcher. Linda's background includes a Master's degree in Human Development and Psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and experience as Director of Professional Development for Outward Bound.

Dennis Meadows is director of the Institute for Policy and Social Science Research at the University of New Hampshire. Another beautiful collection by Bola�o, this one including two essays, one, dedicated to his hepatologist, on (terminal) illness, the other on Spanish literature. The title story is an allegory about Argentinean politics, and the book as a whole--typical for Bola�o--are studies, meditations, and anecdotes on sex, death, politics, violence, terror, and joy. Told with Bola�o's floating style that seems simultaneously to be about everything and nothing. Chris Andrews's translation is impeccable, as it is with Bola�o's other novels translated for New Directions.

When the speaker's friend makes this statement in "Jim," the first story in this small but unforgettable collection of five stories and two essays by Chilean author Roberto Bolano, the reader cannot help but feel that Jim is in many ways the author's alterego. Bolano also began his writing life as a poet, something that is obvious in his recognition of the tiny, seemingly insignificant moment or detail which becomes extraordinary within its context. Such "extraordinary" moments or details are worthy of notice, and even wonder, but as the author shows, they are not necessarily "wonderful." Extraordinary moments are temporal, and, though meaningful, they can also be shocking or sad.

Throughout these stories, the reader becomes hypnotized by the succession of Bolano's images, by the lives he depicts (including his own in the two essays), and by the metaphysical suggestions and possible symbols of his stories, despite the fact that Bolano does not make grand pronouncements or create a formal, organized, and ultimately hopeful view of life. There is no coherence to our lives, he seems to say: chaos rules. Although artists of all kinds try to make some sense of life, Bolano suggests that their visions may not be accurate since they have no way of knowing or conveying the whole story, the big picture, the inner secrets of life. Vibrant and imaginative, Bolano's stories seduce the reader into and coming back to them again and again looking for answers or explanations that often remain tantalizingly out of reach.

"Jim," which takes place in Mexico, one of the many places the peripatetic Bolano lived, tells of a sad, often desperate man who considers himself a poet, someone the speaker once saw staring rapt, bewitched by a fire-eater, who was performing just for him. The symbolism is clear, but the story's conclusion is less so. In "The Insufferable Gaucho," set in Argentina, where Bolano also lived, an honest lawyer in Buenos Aires is affected by the passage of time and the distancing of his children as they grow up and leave home. Believing that Buenos Aires is "sinking" under its crime, violence, and failed economy, he returns to his dilapidated family ranch on the pampas and tries to restore it and himself. "Police Rat," the grimmest of the stories, features Pepe the Cop, a rat who describes life in the sewers, even taking time to comment on the non-role of the arts in the lives of rats. In "Two Catholic Tales," Bolano creates parallel stories, telling of a seventeen-year-old boy who is trying to see if he has a vocation for the priesthood, and of a long-time patient at an insane asylum, who describes his terrible experience with priests.

Two essays at the end are particularly poignant. "Literature + Illness = Illness" explores the relationship between writing and the illness which will claim Bolano's life at age fifty, soon after writing this. In "the Myths of Cthulhu," a wonderful companion essay, he comments on the "perfect novelist," one whose work is famous for its "readability," someone who is popular, and successful as a result. Bolano eventually concludes that "We [writers] are the middle class generation...We think our brain is a marble mausoleum, when in fact it's a house made of cardboard boxes, a shack stranded between an empty field and an endless dusk." An uneven collection. However the story 'Rat Police' is an absolute gem, maybe the finest thing he ever wrote. Worth picking up.

This is kind of a hodgepodge collection, five short stories and two essays. The title piece and longest story doesn't feel like anything else Bolano ever wrote: its got a weirdly pastoral, homey quality to it as we watch an Argentine judge return to the village of his youth following an economic collapse. It's not bad, but it's not really a style that plays to Bolano's strengths. The stories here mostly feel redundant, like weaker variations of things he's done better in his other work.

BUT. The story 'Police Rat' (about a gritty rat cop trying to solve a series of serial killings in an underground rat civilization). Is not simply the strongest thing here, but very possibly the strongest fiction Bolano ever created, period. Maybe even better than 2666, Distant Star, and By Night in Chile.

Never has the ominous sense of dread he evokes, of some impossible evil lying just around the corner, been presented more powerfully. And the set-up of the whole thing, of someone trying to solve a forgotten mystery in a hopelessly marginal, doomed civilization, feels like the most direct distillation of his interests I've ever come across. If you can't be bothered to read 2666, read this instead. It's the seed that book comes out of, and for my money the best short story I've read in quite some time.

The two essays at the end are discursive, free-wheeling and angry. Bolano confronts the illness that would eventually kill him, and what he felt was the middle-class mediocrity of Spanish language literature towards the end of his life. They offer interesting, erudite perspectives, but are nowhere near as dazzling as his fictions. It's a mixed bag, but 'Police Rat' on its own makes the entire thing worth reading

Well, I didn't see THAT coming! UHG!

I am not a fan of love triangles and I really hate it when either the hero or heroine is SLEEPING with someone other than her true love, so this story really disappointed me. If you have read any of my reviews, you know I read for romance first, action second. I notice a lot of readers go one way or the other on this, and I am definitely romance FIRST! If you couldn't care, this is a 5 star book for you, if sleeping around, back and forth rubs you wrong, you will not enjoy this book.

Romance part ***SPOILERS***

Alyssa and Kane love each other, but feel betrayed and lied to because of what they are (a witch and a dark one - natural enemies). They both think the other one was using them and are hurt. Kane is much crueler than Alyssa as his bond with her makes her crave him sexually. In fact, Alyssa is a nymphomaniac the whole book, first because of her bond with Kane and later for reasons unknown. She is climbing on Kane and Gage the whole book and looking sexually at other immortals. When Kane's bond becomes too much for her, she has sex with Gage which breaks the bond, but not her love for Kane. Of course, then Kane realizes Alyssa never played him and wants her back, only now she is with Gage, but still kissing and rubbing up against Kane. Honestly, it felt like a m�nage with the three of them and was not romantic at all. While Kane is insanely territorial around Alyssa, it does not seem to apply to Gage, who he watches fondle and love on Alyssa without comment. Of course in the end, neither ends up with her and who knows who will be in her bed in book three. I hated that part of the story.

Action part NO SPOILERS

This part is quite good with an evil ex of Kane's after Kane and Alyssa and a adeepening relationship between Alyssa and her father. There is some confusion about Alyssa's mother who has returned but is not acting normal. Alyssa comments on it, but then later reveals all her adventures to "her mother" knowing something is off. That part really didn't make sense. Alyssa learns to use more of her powers and more history of all the creatures is revealed, showing the Alyssa is really in danger. There is also a mortal witch that is setting both Kane and Alyssa up as murderers; leaving dead bodies behind in an attempt to call for a powerful evil spirit. Amy is still hating Alyssa and is determined that Kane is her fated mate. The action and plot is really interesting, but is blown by the sexual betrayals and stupid misunderstandings.

I really loved the first book and could not have predicted that the story would take this turn or I wouldn't have kept reading it. I really wish the author had not set up a triangle and am now wary to read her other books that I downloaded after enjoying the first book so much. I honestly don't thing I will continue with this series as I really don't want Kane and Alyssa back together after she has been with Gage and I don't want to see another guy enter the picture either. That's just me though; others will not have a problem with this bouncing around.

This second book is even better than the first book in this series. The more I read of this series, the more I'm hooked. I literally stayed up all night again because the mind boggling suspense in this paranormal book kept me reading and not wanting to stop for a second. Great plot and incredible characters. I'm so ready and excited about the third book. This is truly fantastic paranormal writing.
