Tales of real life soldiers of fortune

"Mercs" is a series of tiny anecdotes (usually anywhere from 3-10 pages) about various mercenaries throughout history, with a special emphasis on the twentieth century, except for the final section, which is a long long piece on mercenaries sent to start a coup in Ghana. Most of the stories range from lame to fascinating, depending on what happens. My favorite anecdotes were the ones about Sir John de Hawkwood, English condotierre in Renaissance Italy. The anecdotes that didn't hold too much of an interest to me are the ones from the mid-20th century, especially the ones in Vietnam (they just kinda blend together to me). I also thought it might have been a bit better if they included a bit more of the post-Cold War mercenaries. But all in all I would say it's a decent book.

A good overview of historical professional soldiering

There are many causes worth fighting for, but some just go without mention thanks to lack of media coverage (Biafra comes to mind). Some mercenaries do not fit the Hollywood mold of a ruthless, senseless warmonger with a thirst for blood and the next big paycheck. Some mercs are angels of mercy, sacrificing themselves for those whom it may not be "politically suitable" for other large nations (read: USA) to aid.
"Mercs" covers some of these individuals with interesting non-fiction short stories. Of particular interest to this reader were the accounts of Count Carl Gustav von Rosen, who led five modified light aircraft armed with small rocket pods on morning raids against the Nigerian Air Force (mostly MiGs), and the stories concerning the history of the French Foreign Legion.

Mercs-- A cut above the rest

This is a highly interesting collection of stories. It covers the history of merenaries from the Greeks in Persia to the modern day drug wars. This book has a definite intellectual edge to it, as the writers clearly have a decent education. If you are used to reading military stories written by veterans with little or no education (not to say the stories are not interesting) this is a refreshing, clearly written book. I enjoyed it thouroughly, and learned many things that I found both surprising and entertaining.

This is like a cookbook on design patterns. I used the word cookbook because, it covers the important aspects of design patterns for beginners and interview preparation.

This book first covers the design patterns and followed by design patterns interview questions.

For the design problems discussed in this book are useful for the people who are appearing for interviews.

The problems discussed are real-time problems (for example, chat server implementation) and thorough enough to get the idea of what kind of questions to expect in these kind of questions.

A huge disappointment. I am returning it back.

This book is a joke on people who shell out close to $40 to buy it.
Its language is bad, its text is confusing, and its organization is hectic.
The code examples authors provide are very artificial and uninspiring at best, and on nightmarish side at worst, when they for some reason decide to give a C++ example (a language they clearly learned years ago in a college class and never used in real life).
Their proposed solutions to design interview questions they provide would have ended a job interview in any firm I used to work for.

It pains me to think that they market this book "for beginners" - the most vulnerable segment.
If you are in the beginning of your journey to become a competent software engineer you should read these books instead:
- Applying UML and Patterns by Craig Larman ( [...] ) - this one is the must, and the best one I know
- Head First Design Patterns ( [...] ) - good for beginners, lot of pictures and jokes.
- And possibly try to read Design Patterns Explained ( [...] ) - I've read it a long time ago, and don't remember details about it, except that it was a good read and made design patterns concept clear for me.

Great insight and useful information

Rarely do I write a review but I felt this book definitely deserved one. It is rare that I connect to a story/book the way I did to this one. The story is deep, dark, real and ultimately positive for anyone who understands the chaos that has to happen in order to break down all of the wrongs that have been put into place. To me it was a story about patience, humbleness and soul. If you can get in touch with those few things, you are gold to this place and books like this help us to remember the importance of developing ourselves to be our best versions as to maintain strength and character during difficult times, while being a pillar to those who need one. I recommend this book for anyone who sees or does not see as it is a great way to open up the conversation regardless of your perspective on how things really are. It actually had a lot of great ideas on natural living and such incorporated into the story. I actually cried at the end for more reasons than one.

I recently began watching the author's Youtube videos and I am always so impressed with another who can see the truth about what is going on while maintaining sanity status and incorporating spirituality into it as well. This book and the videos really help to round it all out and I hope that my review will help another to be encouraged to dig deeper and find something you can connect with.

An essential and unique message

In 'The Choice', Romano provides an excellent critique of modern society from a spiritual perspective. While most visions of the apocalypse feel exclusive, this one feels inclusive, indicating to the reader that one needs only to connect to the divinity within in order to achieve a spiritual enlightenment which will allow one to thrive during the coming calamity. Pick this up and enjoy it!

This book has brought to light the latent knowing I have lived with for years. It is not so much a work of fiction as much as a compilational handbook for opening your eyes to the forces at work on the planet and inside us all. Sincerely recommended for all seekers. A must-read.
