About the Author

Michele A. Paludi is president of Human Resources Management Solutions and participating faculty at Union Graduate College, Schenectady, NY. Paludi is series editor for Praeger's Women's Psychology and Women and Careers in Management and has authored or edited 38 texts on workplace discrimination, sexual harassment, psychology of women, workplace violence, and campus violence. Her book Ivory Power: Sexual Harassment on Campus received the 1992 Myers Center Award for Outstanding Titles in Human Rights. She was recently named "Woman of the Year" by the Schenectady Business & Professional Women's club and is currently the Elihu Root Peace Fund Professor in Women's Studies at Hamilton College, Clinton, NY.

I had the same problem as the other reviewer. I didn't realize this is the teacher's edition. The photo cuts it partly off so if you aren't extremely careful, there is no way of knowing. The description doesn't clarify this is the teacher's edition either. So I need to order another book as well. :(

From the 1820s until well after the Civil War, American artists, like Thomas Cole and Frederic Church, depicted American tourist attractions in their work, and often made their reputations on those paintings. Writers like Irving, Cooper, Hawthorne, and James described their visits to the same attractions or incorporated them into their fiction. The work of these artists and writers conferred value on the scenes represented and helped shape the vision of the tourists who visited them. This interest in scenery permeated the work of both serious and popular writers and artists, and they produced thousands of images and descriptions of America's tourist attractions for the numerous guidebooks, magazines, and other publications devoted to travel in the United States during the period.

Drawing on this fascinating body of material, Sacred Places examines the vital role which tourism played in fulfilling the cultural needs of nineteenth-century Americans. America was a new country in search of a national identity. Educated Americans desperately wished to meet European standards of culture and, at the same time, to develop a distinctly American literature and art. Tourism offered a means of defining America as a place and taking pride in the special features of its landscape. The country's magnificent natural wonders were a substitute for the cathedrals and monuments, the sense of history that Europe had built over the centuries. Moreover, Sears argues, tourist attractions like Mammoth Cave, Mount Auburn Cemetery, Yosemite, and Yellowstone functioned as sacred places for a nation with a diversity of religious sects and without ancient religious and national shrines. For nineteenth-century Americans, whose vision was shaped by the aesthetics of the sublime and the picturesque and by the popular nineteenth-century Romantic view of nature as temple, such places fulfilled their urgent need for cultural monuments and for places to visit which transcended ordinary reality.

But these nineteenth-century tourist attractions were also arenas of consumption. Niagara Falls was the most sublime of God's creations, a sacred place, which, like Mount Auburn Cemetery, was supposed to have a profound moral effect on the spectator. But it was also an emporium of culture where the tourist shopped for Niagara's wonders and for little replicas of the Falls in the form of souvenirs. In Sacred Places, Sears describes how this strange, sometimes amusing, juxtaposition of the mythic and the trivial, the sacred and the profane, the spiritual and the commercial remained a significant feature of American tourist attractions even after efforts were made at Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Niagara Falls to curb commercial and industrial intrusions.

Sears also explores how the nineteenth-century idealization of home stimulated the tourists' response to such places as the Willey House in the White Mountains, the rural cemeteries, and even the newly established asylums for the deaf, dumb, blind, and insane. And, in an intriguing account of Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania, he examines the reasons why an important nineteenth-century anthracite transportation center was also a major tourist attraction.

Most of the attractions discussed in this book are still visited by millions of Americans. By illuminating their cultural meaning, Sacred Places prompts us to reflect on our own motivations and responses as tourists and reveals why tourism was and still is such an important part of American life.

Enjoyable, but limited in scope

Sears argues that 19th century American tourist attractions tended to be secular places sanctified by natural sublimity and nationalistic idealism in which the nation was symbolized by natural grandeur or American ingenuity. This history is extremely easy and enjoyable to read, as well as academically well-informed and researched. It does, however, present a very limited view of American tourism, focusing only on sublime landscapes, with only passing mention of resorts and a complete lack of awareness of 19th century historical site tourism.

good reference guide for the TCM-curious and those on a vibrant health quest

This is an interesting, pleasingly short read for those interested in dietary wisdom that is thousands of years old, tried and true. There is a great deal to *digest* here and Bob Flaws makes the info easily accessible to laypeople. Among the most meaningful tips for my own constitution which I walked away with (some are common concepts, others are new to me) are these: eat more cooked vegetables, avoid cold and raw foods whenever possible, eat way less meat (land and sea animals), eat more whole grains, eat smaller quantities, drink a small amt. of warm beverage with meals; avoid dairy, coffee, refined sugar, and processed foods.

I have a renewed respect for Traditional Chinese Medicine after reading this book. It makes a lot of sense, as borne out by practicing some of the tenets on myself and seeing how these practices play out in others. The book makes me want to cook more meals at home, and there are many helpful recipes in the book.

Cons: This book, like all the other TCM info I've accessed through books, online, and TCM practitioners, lacks explanations of what this mysterious dampness, cold, heat, and qi really are, molecule-wise and perhaps using other descriptions, detailed ones. Why keep us in the dark?? All esoteric concepts such as this should be explained, or it is a letdown and a disservice to those who seek answers.

This turned my heart, perspective of food, and life around!

After having struggled with being considerably overweight for over 50 years, I had almost lost hope until I found this and read it....in one day! I could not put it down! I knew The Lord had directed me to it. I had tried everything, well almost everything, except what Pam had shared. I thought, well, with the Lord's help, I will give this a try. I knew this was what He wanted of me, obedience. That was a month ago, and He has carried me in an amazing way, and I have NO doubt He will continue as I follow the Lord's guidance and Pam's lead. Pam's Biblical perspective is very trustworthy. I really appreciated her personal transparency and humility. I wish I could shout it from the rooftop how great this book is! Do read it. You will be very glad you did!

Pam...where have you been all my life?

I have struggled with food all of my adult life. Gaining and losing have been a "huge" part of my life. I underwent RNY gastric bypass in June of 2008. The weight came off. I wasn't tiny but 170 lbs was so much better than 328 lbs. fast forward to October 2013... Feel like a failure. Reading this book I finally discovered my twin. Someone who had the same issues, same weaknesses and same faith. I have inhaled this book and I'm so excited for this journey. Fabulous book if you have ever had an "affair" with food. Anorexia and bulimia always get the press but compulsive Overeating affects countless people who just feel hopeless and afraid. Thank you Pam for taking the reader by the hand and leading them out of the chaos! You are a God-send.

I highly recommend this book for both individual and group support and study!!! This is an answered prayer. The individual reader , the counselor, doctor, principal, church leader .... You can trust Pam as she writes with transparency and shares both her struggle and success with food addiction. Hopeful, honest, encouraging... All inclusive , she offers a solid plan for healing both the physical and spiritual wounds that come with misusing and abusing food.

By keeping food as close to its natural state as possible, we preserve the nutritional content by up to 70%–90%. Vitamin C and B vitamins are especially sensitive to heat degradation, along with the enzymes that help our food digest more efficiently. Raw preparations like blending and food processing keep the nutrients intact and allows us to create wonderfully tasty raw dishes.   The major raw food groups are fruits, leafy greens, vegetables, sprouted nuts and seeds, and sea vegetables. The early pioneers of the raw food health movement were vegans and did not include animal products, but today some raw foodists include raw dairy, eggs, meat, and fish. I find a plant based diet is more cleansing and alkalizing, especially if you are switching from a Standard American Diet (SAD), so I’ve only included vegan recipes in this book. If you choose to eat raw animal products, make sure you get them from a clean and humane source.

Just as the title says...

I never write reviews, but for this one I felt completely compelled to do so. These recipes aren't just raw and simple, they're also absolutely delicious! There's tons of valuble information in the beginning portion of the book. I ordered Judita's first book 'Going Raw', and although the recipes weren't extremely complicated, I found it to be a little overwhelming and was a little "turned-off", but that's probably because I'm relatively new to this lifestyle and the didn't have the proper equipment. This book on the other hand is completely straight forward and all you need is a knife, a blender, and food processor; maybe an icecream machine for 1 or 2 recipes but she also gives alternatives and even gives advice on how and when to try your own variations. This is the book you want when you'd like to begin incorporating raw foods into your lifestyle. Some of the ingredients can be a little expensive and hard to find (or maybe it's just me) but I promise you'll be happy to have spent the time and money! I made the spicy nacho cheese dip and when I shared it with some of my classmatesYYwho are completely cynical when it comes to unconventional foodsYYI had told them what it was called but I didn't necessarliy say that it was vegan and raw haha and they loved it! They were all completely shocked when I told them what is was made from.

This is the fourth raw food cookbook that I've bought and it's by far my favourite... You won't regret purchasing it! The layout of the entire book is simple, clean, and sophisticated. All the images are in colour and the pictures of the recipes themselves will make you drool haha. Judita even goes as far as recommending other books if you'd like to expand your knowledge on a certain subject. She also includes websites for equipment, ingredients, information, and to get in touch with other raw foodists. Get this book and good luck on your path of healthy living! :)

Raw and Simply Fantastic

After having purchased Judita Wignall's first book (which I also rate as a 5-star) I eagerly anticipated her second book arriving in the mail. I am not disappointed. Very easy recipes with accessible ingredients that don't require a degree from the Culinary Institute of America to prepare. Quick, easy, uplifting recipes that even my teenagers love.

I have been exploring raw foods since around 1997 and found the movement very dogmatic, intense, and overbearing with recipes containing an onerous amount of ingredients and very heavy. I give this new generation of raw foodists a huge amount of credit for removing the dogma and and simplifying healthy food.

This book is a complete joy and if you are new to raw foods she is very simple and concise with offering ideas on how to gracefully transition to a healthier life.

Another book beautifully done by this author.

finally a raw "cook" book that I'll use. Easy, simple recipes...no complex prep, no dehydrator needed...I do still need a new juicer and blender (saving up for a vitamix) but you can prepare 95% of these with what you already have. LOVE IT!
